Lots of debates on this, the official position is that it needs to be AGM, only issue is whether you go for the 70 amp or 80 amp battery.

80 amp required for stop start.

Arguably given the dependence on good battery state the 80 amp is preferred..but that's no official policy..

All IMHO...

Had to bite the bullet and purchased the AGM and managed to get them down to £134.74 will fit tonight and code with Carly 👍

I replaced the battery in my 35i last September. The original battery (which had BMW labels, so I'm assuming it was the one fitted at the factory) was a lead acid battery, and I replaced it with a Bosch lead acid (as specified on the Euro Car Parts website). I've had no problems, the new one has a 3 year guarantee (4 or 5 years are available for more money). I did register it using Carly, but I don't think it really needed doing as it was the same type and amp hrs.
I think if you do have Stop/Start you may need the AGM battery.
The original battery was a lot heavier than the new one, I suspect I will find out why in 3 years...
Cheers, Dave

When i asked BMW if i could upgrade my car with servotronic steering part of the upgrade was the 80amp/hr battery. So you need to replace with the same that is fitted. I never upgraded. But AGM do seem to last a long time compared to the bi-annual replacements of lead acid on previous cars i have owned.

AGM just means 'absorbent glass mat'. In other words the liquid electrolyte is stored soaked into the glass mats between the plates.
It makes the battery lighter, dramatically improves its lifespan, removes the need to top up and allows deeper discharge and faster charge/discharge rates, yes you do need one.

It doesn’t HAVE to be AGM as long as you code it as such. It’s just that AGM do have better performance. A non AGM one will still work just fine, esp as you don’t have stop / start.
