Need help quick, need new battery

Have the car less tha 2 years and the battery is caput. I can replace it myself, but need to know where (like autozone?) and which battery to get. The Z4 is a 2005 2.5i.

I was concerned in my previous 2003 Z4 that I might need a battery the last winter that I had it. I check with Sears at the time and they did carry batteries that would replace the factory original. There was actually 2 or 3 choices as I recall.

There are some lighter weight batteries on the market nowadays. I would check into a few of them before jumping in. So this is out of warranty I take it?

I should be covered by warranty, but I'm waiting for my SA to get back to me with the details. Crazy, I was going to buy a new battery, but hell when buying a bmw the cost of "free" warranty service is already factored in, so hopefully a free battery is in my stars.

After AAA slightly charged the battery, I had turned the car off for about an hour. Then I thought that taking it for a drive might at least recharge some of the battery. Of course, only if the car now started. Well, it did and I went on 15 miler around the neighbor. Anyway, If I don't hear from my friendly SA tonight, I'm just going to take a ride to the stealership
40 miles round trip...if the car strts in the morning, that is. BTW, any knowlegeable comments about how well my battery has been recharged, appreciated.

Believe me, if there is enough charge in the battery to start the car - it is charged a lot.

Assuming your electrical system is working properly about 30 minutes of driving will recharge your battery to capacity. This assumes that you battery is capable of taking a charge.

Car started fine this morning after an overnite in the garage. However, although it did take a charge, how can I tell if it won't drain out and not start the nest ime the car is off for a while. In other words, I'm waiting for my SA to get back to me and I would like to know what I should tell him so that I don't have to worry about the battery.

I don't know that you can tell without proper test equipment which the dealer will.

How's this for a bummer. The SA said that since I don't drive the car 15K/year, the battery is NOT under warranty and I'd have to replace it myself ($166 for battery, I can install it myself). The more you drive the car, the longer the battery will perform.

Well, now on to the next step. As you know I drove the car around yesterday after AAA gave the battery a slight boost. I put a volt meter on the battery this morning (BTW the car did start this morning without any problem), and it read 12.5V. I don't think that I need a new battery, but just a good charging and a longer drives. So with that in mind, I'm thinking of going to my local AutoZone to ahve them check out the rechargeability of the battery...Can they do this???

Also, since I'm such a low mileage user, I'm thinking of getting a trickle charger...any suggestions on which one to get. The SA said that it should be one that automatically shuts off when the battery is fully charged.

The S/A just gave you a bunch of bullshite. 15k/year to qualify? Are you sure that is what he told you?

Yes.
Just checked with BMWNA. They verified.
If AutoZone tells me that the battery is rechargeable, I'm going to get the Battery Tender Plus (under $50 with shipping).

I guess if you would lease a BMW with an allowance of 12K per year your battery would not be covered?? What a load of BS... :x

Had Walmart's top battery tester test my battery. He said battery was functioning normally with no dead cells. Furthermore, the battery was fully charged and he didn't think there was any reason to get a battery tender. So, I'll try to run the car a little more and I always have AAA to call upon if the battery does really go south.

Sorry but that made me laugh!! Is that like getting served at McDonalds by a member of staff with 4 stars?

Yeah, it was meant for laughs. But, the guy did seem to know what he was doing. And, as far as I could tell, the tests he ran did show that everything was running/charging normally (tested battery statically and when engine/lights/a-c were on).

Another question about the battery. It has an indicator that has three possibilities:
1. Battery needs to be replace will show a yellow glow
2. Battery fully charged shows a green light
3. Battery incompletely charged shows a black.

My battery shows black. Should a I get a trickle charger (Battery Tender), or take the car on a 50+ mile jaunt to see if it will fully recharge?

Buy a new battery... for all the time and effort this is taking I wouldn't waste another minute contemplating what to do. Yeah, I know it is easier to spend your money than mine but there is a law of diminished return that needs to be applied here. Spend the money on a long life/sealed battery. Good luck.

The BMW battery costs about $166. I'll install it myself. Any recommendations, other than the BMW one? My SA told me that if I don't install a BMW battery and something goes wrong with the electrical system or there are problems with the alternator, BMW might not honor my warranty.
