Narrowest Garage Entrance for E89?

Evening guys,

I've seen a house I really like, but the garage door itself is only 216cm wide and I don't have folding mirrors. Garage itself is 2.90cm wide and over 6 metres long, so enough room inside. I'm coming from a rather spacious double garage so never had to cram my car in. From what I've read the car is 195cm wide including the mirrors.

Anyone got a similar sized garage and manage ok? Sounds tight to me and a recipe for damage.

G

I would be more concerned with having enough space to open the door once in the garage. The E89 doors are long

The entrance to my garage is narrow but wider inside as its a double served by a stupid double door design - There is also a pillar inside, just where the door of the Z4 opens. Ive got a carpet tile on the wall!

I will measure up for you tomorrow.

My garage door Is marginally wider than 212 cm and I can just squeeze the car in with care, with mirrors unfolded. It’s an automatic and I line it up carefully bracing my left foot on the bulkhead so I can lift myself out of the seat and stick my head out of the driver’s window. I can then line up the edge of the driver’s wing mirror to just clear the frame of the garage door. I drive in really slowly and as I approach the doorway I can see whether the mirror is going to clear. If it looks a bit tight I reach out and fold in the mirror manually. Then when I am through the narrowest part I open up the mirror again. Just be careful the first time you fold the mirrors. If they haven’t been folded before they could stick and cause some damage. I sprayed them with WD 40 and left them for a few minutes before trying to fold them. It sounds a bit complicated but I have had my E89 for over a year and haven’t had any issues. Hope this helps.

Mines of a similar size, I just don't use it for the car as have other items in there

Might be worth doing it with the roof down could make getting in/out easier, its probably what id try :P

Mines quite tight,I drop the windows before entering the garage ,this makes getting out easier.

I always put the car away and drop the roof and windows to enable me to get out with some dignity intact! This is where the smarttop module pays dividends!
The roof is also dropped to allow me to get back in again :and drive out - it’s easier to reverse out than it is to drive in

I aim / centralise the car visually before driving in and use the display of parking sensors (equal red segments) to assist driving thro the narrow gap.

My garage is not enormous thats why I made sure I got a car with PDC front and back. The E89 doors are a bit long so Ive bolted plumbing pipe down both sides of the garage and then covered that in heavy duty pipe lagging at door height, so when you open the door you don't catch it on the wall.

My garage door is 205cm wide although it does open up a bit once inside. Z4 I think is 179cm mirrors folded.

I can only dream of a garage door 216cm. Fold the mirrors going in and you're OK.

The walls inside are lined with carpet to protect the door opening. I've not scraped anything in 5 years.

Go buy your house. :D

Thanks for insights so far

Sounds like I'll be able to squeeze the car in no problem, but just have to accept I won't be able to do any maintenance once inside.

There is also the feature where, if you click the unlock twice before you open the door, then the window drops as you open it, and closes again when you close the door.
I use it a lot in my garage as it is so much easier to get out if you can lean forward over the window.

My garage dims:-
2130 entrance
2580 internal width

The car drives in and out with the mirrors extended.
I get in and out of the car roof down and windows down.

My garage door frame is 2.11 wide and the garage walls are 2.27 apart, BUT the previous owner of the house had knocked a hole in the drivers side of the garage wall and built a plywood external box, allowing the car door to be opened into this box. This makes getting into and out of the car relatively easy.

Good luck.

That happened to my father in law. He bought a new Kia Sportage brought it home, drove it into the garage and then couldn’t open the driver’s door to get out. We were in stitches especially listening to the colourful language. He had to alter the garage to accommodate his new car. There is a lesson there for all of us.

Garage width/Car width was another influencing factor in deciding not trading in for a 2019 Z4

l heard about a guy in Rome whose garage was so narrow he could not get out of his car once he drove in. So instead of driving in, he'd get out the car outside, leave the handbrake off and just push the car in. Then the opposite to get it back out.

Well I didn't go for that house, just wouldn't work for me, no room to tinker even if it was a better location. The house I've gone for has a large double (8mx6m) and a small single (2.5x5.5) :D :D

I hate how small “normal” garages are now. I’m just in the process of spec’ing a single garage/workshop and have gone for 3.7m width, which hopefully will leave ample room for workbenches as well as the car.
