named driver implications......

My sister in law is looking to add me as a secondary named driver to her insurance policy in order to reduce the price. my question is; if she makes a claim (highly probable as just passed her test!) would I need to declare that next year on my own renewal policy? Cheers guys and girls.

No, as you wouldn't have made a claim on your own policy.

I've had my mother on my policy for 5 years, and the most she's done is sat in the driver's seat, but it was done with the best intentions so that she could use my car in an emergency. She's removed from the policy now though as she had an accident in her own car a year or so back and it added 20% to my premium.

You would not - you won't be raising any claims under your name.

Of course if you're driving her car and have a crash and need to claim - then you will.

Cheers boogle. I don't mind helping her out but would worry everyday she was in the car about my losing no claims discount.

Agree with Boogie. A definite "no".

When taking out - or renewing - a policy, the question insurers always ask is: "have you (or any of the named drivers) had any accidents or made any claims in the last xxx years"....

In the example you describe, you wouldn't have had an accident (she would have) nor made a claim (she would have, as the policyholder). You are simply a named driver on her insurance....

This is just as well as I am a named driver on SWMBO's insurance and she is very prone to having little prangs!

Following on from my last post, your no claims discount is only ever affected if a claim occurs under your own policy. You could have five accidents on her insurance policy and they would not affect your own no claims discount....!

Thanks mmm five, sorry for dissing your reply, it must've come through same time as boogles and I didn't see it. Thanks for extra reassurance too mrlozzer. I can't rest easy now ha ha

Over the years I've had cause to look very closely into all of the ins and outs of car insurance. Glad to be of help!
