N54 ECU Tuning on a 35is

My 35is is on order and will get it in June. 8)

I'm very interested in purchasing one of the tuning systems that are on the market and am curious if anyone has installed one of these (ESS, JB4, Procede) on a 35i or a 35is?

The ESS is significanlty more than the JB4 so am wondering what type of experience is out there with these tuners.

Any advice you can give is greatly appreciated. :?

I'm sure socket r will be along to comment as I believe he has ess. My take on this, being interested myself for my 35i, is ess is more for a good reason. The gadget to update the car or take it to stock for warranty/servicing is a fantastic plus. The jb4 isn't a remap as such but a device that intercepts the ECU. The negative is it requires you dismantle the ECU and wire in the jb4. Even if you felt confident doing that, you'd have to take it all apart every time it went back I to BMW. I'd rather pay more to ess for a proper remap and the ease of returning it to stock.

dhplacy, maniacs said it all, ESS FTW  You'll have a machine that can gut alot more expensive machines, I've had to tweak the suspension as the cornering speed becomes a challenge for the stock setup lol
You will not believe how quick you can hit 80mph, I purposefully track at stock speeds on the motorway just to get some wannabies cruzing up behind, then squeeze a little  I swear other drivers are like WTF!

But I forgot you can only do like 50mph in the USA

Yeah, I have a feeling that speeding tickets will be a problem :(

As I understand it, you download the car's current program into the unit then send it back to ESS and then they send you the program for your car. If/when you take it to the dealer you then reinstall your car's "official" BMW program. Correct? How do you know (or not know) if the dealer does an update to your "official" program?

The other question has to do with the "overboost" function on the 35is. Does the ESS program change that or does it still exist?

I suppose this this next question should be in a different thread; but, what did you have to do to the suspension? From the articles I've read they aren't very complimentary about the suspension.

I really appreciate your feedback on this. Can't wait to get my hands on that vehicle. Of course, I have to get out of Iraq first... :x

Apologies for the length mate, get some popcorn :)

Yeah you Read your cars ECU settings and save the file to your laptop (with the new E Flash system) whereas before you'd have a handheld flash device. The E Flash gives you much more diagnostics abilities, so you can not only read but also clear any fault codes. Plus the system can receive updates from ESS and effectively grow with your cars setup.

Regarding the ECU update I would honestly drop the guys at ESS an email as I havnt had this experience myself and wouldnt want to give you any missleading advice. I have my car covered under an extended BMW service package but choose to take my car to my mate who is an independent specialist an ex BMW trained technician and general oracle on BMW, he even race prepares BMW's, lambos, ferraris etc :) . He's a has all the main dealer diagnostic equipment and more  so I leave it in his trusted hands lol

ESS does vin lock to your car so I would assume the write process would fingerprint the ECU package even when an update is applied so you could simply re apply your map. But as I mentioned it's a question for ESS.

Overboost again I'm not sure about as I have the 35i flavour. Although with the ESS maps the performance variance between 35i and IS is negligible according to reports from ESS, presumably because the IS is a lightly tuned version of the stock 35i.

For the suspension question it's a tricky one and I speak only from my experience and opinion so here goes. People that say Don't touch BMW suspension don't know what there talking about. It's not perfect out of the box not even M suspension although it is significantly better than standard SE/M Sport stuff. I felt my E89 'wollowed' and dipped quite a lot in the corners what with the weight of the roof, so under advice went with the Eibach Pro Kit. A relatively in-expensive upgrade and not as extreme as coils but making what I feel is a noticable improvement to the handling characteristics especially under higher speed cornering, due to the progressive dampening. The car feels flatter and is able to handle the increased acceleration the tunes provide without rocking out of the bends and generally making you feel like you going over the top of the next hedge :D

If you need any parts numbers or contacts feel free to drop me a PM.
