MZ4 Alarm Operation

So I had my OEM alarm activated a few weeks ago as well as a few different programmable options with me at purchase about 2 months ago.

I left with the assumption that it was done without a problem since the vehicle now makes an audible alert upon lock and unlock as well by the fact that the DRLs were also activated.

Recently I noticed that the alarm, while audibly appears to be functioning, is not physically working. On the E46 just leaning on the trunk will set it off.

My reasoning for doubting the alarm functionality is based on the following that all did not activate the alarm:
-Held the lock button (normally activates panic mode)
-Locked the car with the windows down and popped the hood trying to try and get the hood sensor to activate
-Lastly, I tried to activate the tilt sensor by "shaking" the truck

These tests were all done after waiting the normal activation period.

I brought it in this morning to the local dealer (try to avoid them as much as possible for reasons you will shortly see) and get an awesome "talk down" session from the SA assigned to me. "If the audible noise is there, it is working." "This car will only have the alarm go off if you break a window." "This car has a motion sensor."

All three which I find to be incorrect based on experience from previous and current Bimmers. His rebuttle- "This is how the NEW BMWs are."

After informing him that he was wrong since we have 3 other "NEW BMWs" with audible confirmation deactivated at purchase (alarm still functions), and informing him that the E85/E86 alarm system does not even have a motion sensor, he told me it would be an hour labor to have a tech even look at it because "this is how it comes from BMW."

I was hoping to get a confirmation on normal alarm operation to shed some light and make sure I am not extremely off base.

As far as I know there is no alarm in US/Canadian Z4's or Z4M's that comes fitted from the factory. It is a dealer installed option. If you did not have the dealer install it then you probably do not have an alarm....

^I installed the alarm and had the dealer activate it.
That was my whole point to the SA today- him arguing that it was like the from BMW and they were not going to look at it without billing out an hour labor. He claims that it is functioning correctly even after I proved the points listed above.

I just wanted to confirm the 'panic' function is applicable via holding the lock button on the key fob. I can see him arguing that the sensors were not being activated, but the panic button should work either way if the alarm was properly coded on activation.

^Thanks for the confirmation and help! I guess I just need to deal with someone else in service.

A side note- did you keep your audible confirmation activated when you had a dealer do the coding? I can't decide if I want it shut off or not.

I have the audible confirmation in my car. I actually like it....

The Coupe does not have the wiring for the cabin motion sensor. The Roadster on the other hand does have the cabin motion sensor. I have a Coupe now - but I used to have the Roadster....

You mean... Roaster. :poke:

I have audible confirmation on my car too. I actually don't mind it, as it sounds professional (not just the sound of your horn). I rely on it now as another confirmation (aside from the flickering lights) that I locked the car. :)
