My soft top has gone on holiday!

Sods law, heat wave and my roof decides to take a sabbatical! :-)

The other day I went to put it down and it didn't work. I started again (after coming to a complete standstill ( ) and then it went down, arrived at my destination but it would not go up. I can hear what sounds like the motor running but not much happening.

The only pre-cursor to this if I think back is that the roof appeared to be slower to close at certain times than it used to be.

I went manual to open and close it and am now at this point:

I can use the buttons to both unlatch the roof (upon opening), latch the roof (upon closing), and to lock the roof down in the parcel shelf, but I need to manually move the roof up and down once it is unlocked.

Any ideas?

The roof motors away I am afraid and needs replacing. As you mentioned the buttons will unlock and lock the latches, but I would be real careful of manually opening and closing the roof on a regular basis in case you put unwanted stress on the roof mechanism or even still damage or twist the hood frame.

Opening or closing manually is fine! But personally I rather do it with two people to do each side simultaneously.

If you don't want to buy a new roof motor, it's easy enough to remove it, clean it up and get it working again. You just need somewhere dry to park the car and a day to do the work.

Place in Bradford will sell you the motor on its own. But they don't have any as most motors they get in are completely knackered

Same happen to me,new motor to be fitted next Friday.leaving the roof up until then as I don't want to twist the roof frame.

If you decide to replace it, bowser134 lives in Hampshire and did an awesome job of replacing mine. Sources the parts from bmw so you'll get a warranty on those too.

Drop him a PM

I had this while on a roadtrip recently. The Z had been sat in 39c heat for the best part of the afternoon in Basel, the hood dropped fine when i returned to the car but an hour later I tried to close it with the motor whizzing and no hood movement.

I pulled the red hydraulic lever out then pushed back in, about an hour later the roof worked fine and has done since we got back

Thanks for the feedback chaps...

RJS-Z4 are there any "how to" guides out there that you are aware of?

Worcester_spoon thanks for the info, can I ask how much it cost you, and how long ago that was?
