I sold my 3.0i Se to a guy who was posing as a private buyer but who I suspected was a trader all along.

Anyway it's now back up for sale on Pistonheads only it seems to have "lost" 2k miles in 4 weeks....

Great car and was running beautifully but I'm a bit pissed he's used my careful maintenance history to sell a car and then "corrected" the mileage :x

I'd be tempted to put a posting on pistonheads dobbing him in.What a total cock the guy is.But, why only 2000 miles?.Is he was going to clock the thing, he might as well take off more miles so make it worth thre risk.

Probebly because the last service was just done at 87k...any lower and it may seem too obvious

HI Mate,

Here's one for you...report him to the DVLA and the Police :) If he is doing it for that, he will be doing it with others too and it's unfair on anyone that purchases car's off him...you have the power! Imagine some nice chap or lady, looking at that car, wanting to take care of it...then the problems come earlier than they realise because their inspection dates are out, oil changes etc.

Just make sure it's anonymous, ie, ask not to be mentioned, as these guys can turn nasty.

Mmmm, do you not have to declare your mileage on the V5 form? Can't remember, he should get caught out there surely? Easy for DVLA to check then or Police.

Original guvnor - not good. P*ick. ( :roll: Is a lady who says bad words, rude??) IIRC, you can state a mileage on the V5 when you are transferring ownership, but the DVLA doesn't have any way of verifying this. (I often wondered why there was space to put mileage on the form, because of this).
 
If he is a trader, he has committed an offence against Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regs at least, and against the Fraud Act 2006 at worst. The local trading standards department should be informed via Consumer Direct. I have to say that unless the trader is known to them and suspected of similar, probably very little or nothing will be done. At best he could be warned/advised and ordered to put correct mileage back on, the car could even be seized. Like for most local authorities, resources and funds are scarce and you can only take so much on.

I am afraid police will do nothing and will treat it as a civil matter. It is not a local/force priority for any force that I know of and they are too busy chasing other matters which they can count up to govt's satisfaction.

If the poster can PM me the details of the car and purchaser, I will look to see what can be done. I am currently prosecuting a case of a car clocker.

This one is a bit strange because clockers have access to blank service books and stamps and can create a false history, even though you can check mileage to a certain extent via VOSA MOT history. It is normal to wipe thousands of miles off a car to increase its sale value.

If he has tweaked the mileage and wouldnt have thought 2k on 90k would make any difference to the value the tamper dot should be visible on the instrument cluster.

In any case - guy needs to be reported, SO many scam artitsts out there and we could do with one less!!
 
I think there must be some confusion here - perhaps the guy deserves a trial before judgement!

Who in their right mind 'clocks' a car by 2k on a 90k car, whilst outlining the FBMWSH in such detail? I think it's far more likely he's just made a mistake on the advert and in person, the car will have the correct mileage. Or perhaps he's advertised at 89,900 to get it under the 90k mark in a search, and when you see the car, it will show 92k. I test drove an E92 M3 last week advertised on the BMW AUC as having 9,414 miles. I got there and it had done 10,400. Far bigger difference in % terms....was I outraged? Er, not really. Cars move.

Find out the exact facts before you hang the bloke IMO.

Mike,

No mistake - he mentioned the mileage that many times to me when enquiring about the car. I can't be sure he's actually changed the odometer though. Reducing the mileage in an advert to attract custom I suppose some might call marketing, but I would call it dishonest. On the other hand though its nowhere near as serious as changing the odometer, which is unlawful. Let's hope he's only done the former eh.
 
I work for HPI, we run NMR ( National Mileage register). If you put the mileage on the v5, we will get it and this could be picked up, i can put you in touch with the right people at trading standards, if he is a trader and you have his details, he'll get a knock from the local officer at the very least... drop me a line !

Fair enough, but 2k is just not going to achieve anything....no impact on value, it doesnt make sense for such a small change. Can't mak a judgement without seeing the odo IMO
 
it does knock it under 90K, its a phycological thing, but a bit like 9.99 is so much cheaper than a tenner. But i do agree, its very risky for a small amount, we normally see at least 10k.....
 
maybe when he collected the car he drove it in reverse to wherever he was going :lol:

But if he has done this on purpose what a swine - def a pycological thing - a bit like petrol costing 119.9 sounds a lot less then 120.0
