My New Chrome Exhaust Tips

Having been working away for the last fews days I have a card through the door saying the postie has tried to deliver my shiny new chrome exhaust tips. I'm sure you can imagine what the 1st job will be on finishing work tomorrow.

My question is, is the sinlge screw man enough to keep them in place long term? Having read other posts, mention has been made to exhaust putty. Is it worth getting some of this as well or are they ok to go (and stay) on straight from the box?

I'll do some before and after pics although I'm sure you all know what they look like!

You need to give us more infomation Ian. I assume you refer to my thread regarding the newer style exhasut trims?

If so, you will need to follow the instructions I have posted for attachement to a prefacelift car in the said thread. The said thread relates to a 3.0i exhasut back box, the 2.5/2.2 have smaller diameter pipes so I can neither cofirm nor deny the facelift trims will fit.

Instead, should you refer to the prefacelift trims then indeed the screw suffice to attach the trims permanetly.
 
The screw will be fine. You'll probably be fine even without a screw either. They won't go in easily. Once they're on the car, they're pretty much stuck on the car forever.
 
They do expand when warm.

After a hard removal (dirt + cold) and a good clean which got them warm (lots of rubbing cleaning compound etc, ooerr), and they almost felt a bit loose going back on. Thats probably due to cold exhaust inner and warm out though... hmmmm.

I'd use the screw to be sure, but with that tightened (just a nip) it won't move :)

Only thing is the weather here is really crap, don't even want to open the garage door!

Give them a really good coating of that stuff for protecting chrome finishes (forgotten the name)

Will help when keeping them clean in future :)

Not heard of that stuff before, is it different to normal polish? I was going to put them straight on.
 
Ah ok then so it's just a polish rather than a specific sealant then. As I'll need to get some metal polish for the normal cleaning I'll swing past Halfrauds on the way home.

Most polishes have abrasives and protectants in them, so you don't really need to polish them as they are new, just apply a bit of the paste and gently wipe off I suppose :D

Mine were on from 2003 until 2 weeks ago and had never been touched since the day fitted, other than a quick polish and were unmarked when sadly scrapped in error. Don't worry the chrome on them is a good as it gets and as the exhaust is hot it never corrodes.

Some good quality wax will seal any porosity in the chrome if you feel the need to tinker.
 
With them being fom a 3.0i, they defiately fit a 2.2 properly?

They maybe slightly too large and leave a gap between the inner trim and outer exhaust pipe. If so some putty should fill this issue. :thumbsup:
 
I've been looking for the correct chrome tips for my 2005 3.0i. I ordered the BMW part number 82120151088, but they don't fit, not even close. My pipes are more squarish/oval and the tips are round, ie square peg/round hole.
Anyone have any ideas?

nice Z! The chrome tips shoud fit- the orginals sit a little off centre inside but the tips are flush with eachother- will post a pic of mine tomorrow.

What year is it? Looks like a pre facelift front but has the clear indicators
Frankly those pipes look different to anything I've seen. My 2003 3.0i had perfectly round pipes.
Wild guess, but has it had an aftermarket/non OEM but standard backbox/system fitted?
