My Mk1 Golf GTI - roadworthy again after 19 years !

I've posted up pic's here before of my Campaign Mk1 Gold GTI & always thought to myself, "next year I'll get it on the road again", each year came & went & despite the fact it lived in my garage it was covered up & I'd put it to the back of my mind.

We'll for whatever reason, a few weeks ago I thought that this is the year & so I set about getting it sorted, I knew that brakes had packed up having stood idle for the best part of 19 years & I also knew that the big bore exhaust that never fitted properly also had to go, other than that I was dreading the MOT & whatever rubbers might have perished & if rust may have taken hold.

I also knew I wanted to take the boy'ed up bit's off of it & put it back to pretty much standard - I'd kept everything fortunately, I've kept the rear disc conversion (drum brakes were standard) & also the ever so slightly lowered springs & adjustable front shocks, but I may even put these back to stock over the winter months.

A few weeks ago I dropped the standard Pirelli 'P' slot wheels off for refurbishment as they were in desperate need for it, they came up a treat & also had fitted 5 new Pirelli tyres.

Yesterday my mechanic came & towed it to his place for the brakes, exhaust & lumpy idle problem to be fixed & also to present it for MOT to see what they picked up, I truly expected it to be a minefield after the best part of 20 years stood around, albeit in a dry garage.

Well, I'm pleased to say that it passed the MOT, until I pick up the car tomorrow I wont know whether there were any advisories, I forgot to ask, but he did say that it's very clean underneath.

I insured the car yesterday & one I knew that it had passed the MOT I went & got it taxed for 6 months, so now it's finally road legal again.

I'm intending to use the car for dry summer days & weekend toy only.

Please see the before, dusty & with the mods & bigger wheels, & the after pic's with the back-to-standard look (which with the benefit of wisdom to me the standard look is much nicer).

Just need a few minor dings to be sorted out by PDR in the next couple of weeks , cambelt & tensioner change, fluids & filters to be done this weekend & I'm ready to roll.

(The bumper looks wonky in the 2nd pic as I unbolted it & bungied it up to prevent the tow bar scratching the bumper).

I don't know if you can see it from the pic's but the tax ran out in 09/97

It looks great well done for getting it back on the road

I had a black one many many moons ago had some great laughs in it with my mates, I sold it then bought a mk2 with p-slots
big mistake the mk2 was like driving a piece of pig iron compared to the nimble little mk1

Lovely car - you must be glad you kept it. On a Y plate I'm guessing it is a 1.8 - great fun.

I had a black 1.6 complete with Campaign alloys years ago as a stop-gap car (I think it only cost me about £500) and really enjoyed it.

Hi Mr T, yes it is the Campaign model with the 1.8 engine, factory fit sliding steel sunroof, tinted glass etc, (on an A plate though).

I paid £850 for this car in 1991, back then anything 'GTI' was really bad news from an insurance perspective, it was a bit unloved but pretty sound when I got it & so I stripped it to a driveable shell (glass out etc) for a full VAG respray, whilst it was in bits I sprayed waxoyl everywhere I could see a cavity & I think it's this that has kept it in good condition over the years.

Nice motor, reminds me of the days when my mate had one, we went all over in that car at mac1 speed, well it felt like it back then lol :D

Looks great Tony, I can't even remember last seeing one of these on the road! I hope you're keeping well :driving:

Love the old Golfs, especially OEM spec.

I would reset the rear wiper to the OEM location as well, looks much nicer in my opinion of course.

Excellent - it worked out well for you!

I bought and sold my 1.6 in 1997. A mate of mine had a salvage business that was doing quite well back then and we took a Y-plate 1.8 GTi to a track day on the Silverstone GP circuit (as well as a Sierra Cosworth, XR4i, XR 4x4 estate and MK2 RS2000). The GTi was a Cat A so couldn't go back on the road (even though it was actually an undamaged stolen/recovered, but the DVLA went through a phase of that with those sort of cars) and even at over 90K miles it performed really well, at least until the exhaust broke!

The only one we could drive home was the XR4i! Happy days. :D

But if we learnt anything from those track days it was that MK1 and MK2 GTis were virtually indestructible, as well as great fun. So we used (abused?) a few of them!

Classic well done for getting it back on the road. I had a Mk11 jade green 16v back in the day . Awesome!

Hi PVR, yes, I intend to put the rear wiper back to it's upright position, just as soon as I can remember how I did it 20 years ago

What a beauty, any more pics OP?

I will post up more pics in the next couple of weeks, I'm busy painting the inside's of the P's black as they should be, the wheel refurb place said they could do it but it was going to double the price - I can see why too as it took me about 3 hours to do 1 wheel :o , another 4 to go.
