My ///M value...

Guys, firstly sorry I haven't been as active a poster as I used too, been so busy recently and really missing reading through all the topics!

But as some (maybe most...?!) of you may know already, my MC is up for sale. I've had quite a few phone calls but although they are nice people, they just seem to want to chat about cars generally and never follow up with a viewing!

However, I've also had 3 pretty firm offers of £13k, some 'firmer' than others. But all have said they won't spend a penny more. I've said thanks, but no thanks as I'm holding out for more. I've dropped the price from £13,750 to £13,495 and was really hoping/expecting to achieve as close to that as possible.

I suppose I'm in no great rush to sell but every week it's another £23 on Temp Ins and the tax is ticking away. The car obviously has it's positives, and negatives, but what do people think?

I'm aware there were a few recently that sold/were advertised for just under the £13k but who knows how much service was left, condition etc. I'm resisting driving mine too much as I don't want to put miles on and take service indicator down, but it's hard knowing she's there in the garage! But she has to go, needs must so keeping is unfortunately not an option.

So, sell for £13k and let the first person who arrives have it for that or hold out and hope to achieve closer to £13.5k...?

I was, maybe still am hoping to come to the meet tomorrow in Knowle which would be nice because any potential interested parties could see the car. But it's then another 150 odd miles on the car and I'll be knackered for work at 3pm!

You know it has to go mate so take the first £13k , we all want that little bit more but as with anything its only wprth what someone is prepared to pay ?
That said i do think the buyer will get lucky in regard the recent service you carried out & the wheels even though non genuine still have a high want factor .
Do the meet tomorrow & forget the miles , won't make any difference to the sale

I think £13K is a fair price. I guess the mileage is the major turn off. Not many ///M's have seen 10k annual mileage and you are now getting into the zone where warranties are almost useless due to the companies citing wear and tear.

I also wonder what the average achievement is of sale price vs advertised price.

If you accept £13k that's >95% of advertised price. Almost all buyers (especially on private ads) will be looking to knock, 5-10% off of the advertised price. To achieve £13k is decent imho.

If you keep it another 2-3 months then that will cost you £200-£300, so as above don't cut you nose to spite your face.

Personally I think 13k is a steal for a decently optioned and very pretty example of a Z4M, but given the costs you'll incur by just having it sat doing nothing I guess you have to play the long game and compromise.

Looking at PH it would seem like yours is a fair price as it is so if it really must go soon perhaps a counter offer of £13,250 and a full tank of V-power might prise the remaining pennies out of the interested parties. If not, I'd give it a month if possible, have a few nice drives and then take 13k. Chances are someone else will be along in that time once it's on pistonheads.

One other thing, i don't know if it was mentioned in your for sale thread but rear PDC is an option and not standard.

I'd assume that anyone who comes to see it will try to get £500-£1000 off anyway, and always figure this into my asking price, so that the buyer thinks they've got a bargain and I think I've got what I want for it.

However, the Z4MC is the hardest car I've ever tried to sell, and the 3 times I've put mine up for sale I've either had phone calls will silly offers (e.g. £3k-£5k less than advertised) or people promising to come and view and then not bothering.

I'm resigned to 'having to' keep it now :P

If 3 people have all offered you the same amount - that's most likely the true 'value' of the car. I find selling a car privately stressful enough without quibbling over offers that are only 3 or 4% off my asking price.....

A car is worth just as much or as little as people will pay. Advertised well you may reach a greater or more suitable audience and that group will pay more.

Bottom line is if several offer £13k then that's really its value.

Sadly, take it or leave it and don't fret over a few hundred. In 6 months its value may be £12k or £14k,

Same rules apply to houses, or pretty much anything from classic cars to works of art, items on eBay, etc.

Ok thanks guys for your opinions/views on this. I hate talking/thinking about it as it just makes me feel miserable to realise the Zed is going. But anyway, I've covered that about 50 times now! So I've amended the For Sale thread and will contact those who have shown interest / made offers to inform them of the revised price.

Thanks Beanie, some wise nice words there :)

Do people really try and get £1000+ off the advertised price of every car they go and see?! That's pretty ridiculous IMO if the car is sensibly priced.

Plenty of jokers out there woody , personally i would stick with the £13450 ask & any interest shown let them know firmly that £13k is THE minimum needed to take the car , placing £13k no offers is asking for another £250/£500 slicing off the price mate , , , don't do it , , SORN it even until a proper guy turn's up & they will . it just takes time

After a viewing and a test drive a buyer will fall into one of three categories...

1. I love it and deffo want this car
2. Think the car is OK but not really sure I want this one
3. I won't or can't buy this car under any circumstances

If your buyer is in category 1 they will not walk away for the sake of 4 or 5 hundred quid so you will succeed by just saying sorry but the price is £13495 if you want the car. You could offer to valet before pick up or fill up with fuel or both of course.

If your buyer is in category 2 you will only achieve a sale if you come down significantly on the advertised price.

If your buyer is in category 3 then just cut the viewing as short as you can by politely suggesting they should go away and think it over and maybe look at some other examples.

It's usually not that difficult to tell whether someone is a category 1 or not although virtually impossible to work out a buyer who is in the 2 or possibly 3 zone.

Clearly you don't want to move much on price so you will have to wait for your category 1 buyer to come and view your car - they are out there somewhere!

Personally the way I sell cars is to advertise at a fair valuation then work out how much a quick sale is worth to me to set a minimum lower limit.

I employed a different tactic when selling my Z3 though as at the time there were a lot on Autotrader and I wanted a quick sale to allow Z4 purchase so I advertised my Z3 at the lowest I would take for it just to get viewings. I new it was a very tidy example so when one of the potential buyers starting making offers at around £400 below asking price on the test drive I just said no the price is the price perhaps you should go and look at some other examples if you want to pay less. He replied no I've looked at several and this one is by far the best so I got my price!

GLWTS.
