My lights are dim and don't shine far ahead is this normal?

Make sure you mark the screw driver handle though, so you know when you have gone a turn and to ensure you raise both by the same amount.

I don't want to go down the retro xenon fit route I suppose it's something I will have to put up with, I just checked the self levelling and it does work so maybe like Bing suggested I try and adjust the beams.

Never had anyone flash their lights at me for the beams being too high, and plenty others on here have done the same thing. Remember you are starting much lower down than most other cars anyway, so it would take a serious amount of lift on the beams to start troubling anyone :wink:

i wonder if that's a generic problem too. the position we sit in these cars is low and to the back whereas things like the cashcow/smart etc are much higher so there may be some sort of visual effect that makes them seem a bit dimmer too. The westfield suffers terribly from crap lights. they have these olde-fashioned 5 1/4" dish light that even with a high power bulb are like having the road lit by candles. you just sort of get used to it but again your very very low and to the back. i know some cars are better than others (focus was much better than my clio) but i still think there is an optic effect going on.

The angle of the lights to the road as a result of starting so low down is not great, but mine had what looked like the original bulbs in and they really were sh1t. The newer bulbs have helped though. My biggest problem is actually being so low down that I get blinded by just about everyone - ill-adjusted Barry Boy lights are less of a problem though as they mostly go over my head :lol:

Sure it must be a design thing too... the headlights on my S2k were about the same height as the Z4, except those xenons light up the load much better then the xenons in the Z.

Also, try raising the level of the main beams. There is a plastic screw above the light beneath the bonnet - mark a screw driver, work out what way moves them up (lights on, shining against a garage door or wall) and then put a turn and a quarter, maybe a turn and a half on them. Did this with mine and they seem just right... Though still not massively bright

Only thing is, my Indy turns them back down every time I have an MOT or a service :lol:

On my old car I made two complete turns (360 degrees) on each light from a known dead centre headlamp height.

I never had anybody flash me either and could see much better than changing the bulbs.

The problem with brighter bulbs and not adjusting the lights is that all is does it make the area that was lit brighter, where as you really want to extend the range of them.

As above, just remember to adjust for MOT time.

Yep, standard lights on my 2006 Z4 were awful, much worse than the MR2 I had before it...

Xenons in the e89 are brilliant though
