Hi guys

3.0i msport highline edition

Finally found a car I like the look of for decent ish money, not perfect but she has a full service history main dealer, some of the trim will need some TLC, my first concern is, you guessed it, the run flats….should I go 35 all round Goodyear?

Thanks guys for responding to my post……

Once she looks respectable and worthy of showing to the Forum I will post some pics up

Kind regards to all who read

Nick

Welcome Nick

I’ll be the first to say pics needed of the motor!

You’ve joined a good place

Hi Big Winn

This is a great forum, had some really nice input from members, I really really enjoyed my test drive yesterday, and can see why all you guys love this car……feels really solid on the road

Welcome Nick,
Definitely lose the runflats.
Several choices for replacements depending on budget, driving style and (dare I say it) bragging rights.
I am running 18" wheels on my E89 with Goodyear Assy 5s and for me they are excellent.
I think yours should be a staggered set up too, but do check before you blow your cash?
If they are then you should be looking at 225/40 on the front and 255/35 on the rear as standard.

Of course, a nice photo or two would help us to help you. :poke:

Thats fantastic, and thank you all for welcoming me, I was very surprised by the drive yesterday, I didn't know what to expect, but one thing is for sure it did put a great big smile on my face, cant wait until Saturday when I get her.

Thank you all again for the great welcome and brilliant advice.

Ah well, if you haven't got it yet we'll let you off the photos. :D
Don't rush into any changes though. This forum is a great place for spending your money for you, but it is also packed with experience, so well worth asking a few questions and mulling things over before you reach for your wallet.
You wouldn't be the first person to rush out and get new tyres, then realise they'd actually prefer different wheels!

Those are very wise words enuff_zed, looking at the car yesterday I felt a little disappointed, it had got smoked rear lights, its de badged, black alloys, a couple of pieces of trim need replacing……I was actually going to walk away……but shes a 2012 car, and you have to be fair to her shes 10 years old now, so you can forgive trim and cleaning etc, along with underside rusty chassis components……its just going to happen, and at the end of the day these components can be changed for new good quality aftermarket parts…….

For me the drive was important coming from a Porsche Cayman S, and to be fair I wasn't disappointed the engine is nice and sweet, and she has a full BMW dealer service history, handled well enough for me personally, so I bought her for cash, with the understanding I will make her the car I want….

One thing I did find a tad annoying was there was a rattle over my right shoulder, quite loud, im wondering if the damper top mounts on the drivers side might be shot, but again it didnt stop me because all this stuff will be changed……ive resurrected a few cars over the years so Im used to it now…..just finished a beautiful Mk1 TT in Blue, quattro 225.

But having great forum buddies is just worth its wait in gold and means a lot to me, and I cant wait to meet up at some point

Kind Regards

Nick

Hi Nick, I'm sure with a little TLC it will be great and a lot easier on the wallet compared to the Cayman. How about a Mk1 TT Quattro 225 convertible in silver, 2 owners from new, 76k on the clock and garaged all its life, not been started for 3 years.

Zed Baron, wow, how come its not been started?….the mk1 tt will become a classic and collectors item soon, I love mine, shes now in concours condition, I was amazed how over engineered that TT is…..amazing, I was personally really disappointed with the Porsche, the Quality dept at Porsche regarding the Cayman needs sacking IMO, a true drivers car it is, fantastic fan base, fantastic club, and enthusiasts world over and rich ones to boot, but when I found out that the EU have instructed porsche to only hard coat the cranks on engines, as a make work instruction for suppliers in the EU astounded me, I also found out that the cylinder bores on my 3.4 S were as soft as butter leading to bore scoring, although mine never suffered bore score it was only a matter of time, and at £1000 per cylinder re build……no thanks…..sold the car, its a great shame, very track focused car…..just astoundingly to me poor quality….which bucks the trend of what people believe Porsches are……first year ownership £10k repair bill……

Hey again, Nick. Glad you’ve found a car so quickly. At the risk of coming across as obvious, non-RFs require a plug patch and a pump. And yeah, pics or you’re just putting us on. :)

Hi Nick, I can’t think why the EU would be dictating to Porsche how to engineer their engines-do you know why they would do that? :?

Its a clients car, bought it when it was six months old and it was used by their daughter, he's got a low mileage SL as well thats just sitting there (got a few cars). My mechanic (the only one I would trust with this) has been up and checked the TT over and it started straight away after a few checks, only ran it for a couple of minutes and now its going into his workshop for recommissioning and then probably being sold, tempted myself but the Z lives in the garage and MK1 prices seem to be a bit all over the place at the moment. Had the use of my mates Boxster for a month, really nice to drive. I think he's paid out in 1 year what I've paid out in six with the Z, in maintenance and parts.

Hi Marcoose, tell me more about the patch and pump?

Smartbear, this seems to be common now with alot of manufacturers, I have a 69 plate Mercedes GLa 200, this has merc top end to the engine but the bottom end of the engine is a Renault, gone are the days when German cars were solely made in Germany using just german parts sadly, look at Mercedes the are partnered up with the Chinese, and Renault, Aston Martin technology partner is Mercedes also, so you can see now its a massive melting pot for manufacturer's, so i guess all the EU parts suppliers need work to keep coming in.

I hope that helps to answer

It is simply that a run flat will let you drive safely home (or to a safer area), whereas a flat ordinary tyre won't so easily.
There are many solutions, the simplest being breakdown cover I suppose. Some carry a space saver spare.
Ask Rob (Smartbear) about 'rats tails'.
I carry one of these:

Welcome to the forum Nick. Sounds like you had a bit of bad luck with your Cayman. Enjoy the Zed :driving:

Hi Boyo

Thank you for the welcome, yes I did unfortunately, great drivers car, but I will say the Z4 is very similar, just not with the big repair bill the Porker has
