My dashcam caught a hit & run-

I was in the daily driver on Tuesday which is fitted with a dashcam as i work a lot in london and there are plenty of idiots on the road .

I witnessed a car doing a u turn in front of me in the middle of the road in the process he smashed into the rear door or a parked car and proceeded without hesitation to drive off at high speed .Oncoming vehicles witnessed this too when i got home i reviewed the dashcam and its all on there clear as day reg numbers the lot .

I was unsure what to do at first but as i know i would be so pissed off if it was my Z4 i decided to leave a note on the parked car today and had a look at the damaged which is spread across the 2 doors, dented & lots of paint transfer .

Have i done the right thing or should i have reported it to the police ??

You have evidence so report it to the police.

Report it to the Police ASAP before the offending car is repaired. It also takes you out of the equation personally as all parties will use the Police as mediator and you for evidence.

I should imagine the Police will now be informed anyway if you've contacted the owner. Well done for leaving a note though. I wish someone would have done the same for me when my Motorbike got knocked over in a College Car park and I'm having to pay over £200 to get it fixed.

I only left the note today about 12.00 and i was rushing to the airport on tuesday evening when it happen and wanted to view the video first
i didnt get back until this morning so the owner may not have seen the note yet ,
Its indisputable he hit it the car shakes from the impact so even if he repairs his car it makes no difference .

I just feel by reporting it to the police im getting more involved than i need to be they will want me to bring the video to the station etc
i will give a copy of the video to the owner of the car if they contact me let them report it

You have witnessed and have evidence of a leaving the scene of an accident. You should report it to the Police. They may even come to collect the footage from you. That note you left, pretty windy today, oh there it blows up the street.

I've submitted evidence to the police before - did it all over the internet, I think shared via dropbox or similar. I didn't need to go to the police station.

The guy who did the hit is relying on everyone's fear and not wanting to get involved to get off. Report it, only sensible thing to do

Put the shoe on the other foot and imagine you were the owner of the car that got hit. You would certainly be happy to find someone with evidence had given it to the police.

Just burn it onto dvd and post it to the cops or owner, personally i do not like getting involved with the police as it usually involves being inconvenienced at best, last time I helped the police with evidence it cost me time and money that i couldn't get back :thumbsdown:

Thats my thought exactly ,its the same police Borough that i reported drug dealing to in the street outside my old flat ,by the time it was finished i felt like i was the guilty party !!

Frankly I would be surprised if the police show any interest whatsoever. If no one was injured then it is an entirely civil affair. Similar thing happened to me when some idiot gouged my rear offside passenger door. Reported it to the police and suggested the car park this happened in had CCTV. It was then down to me to gather the evidence and in the event the CCTV wasn't recording at the time......... Then just for good measure the police issued me with a 5 day document declaration! Complete and utter waste of time and significant inconvenience to me. Never again!

Completely different situation to the OP. This was the public highway where they left the scene of an accident. The OP has footage not CCTV. You were in a carpark which changes the whole scenario and CCTV which is always a problem. OP should contact the Police and keep Karma flowing.

Police will not be interested this will be a civil matter however as its a hit and run they should be but in reality they will not care.

Also just saying but this can give you hassle by being witness by having to file reports of what happened then possible being summoned to court to be witness. I would leave the details with the owner of the car and let him proceed

From the Road Traffic Act:

170 Duty of driver to stop, report accident and give information or documents.
1. This section applies in a case where, owing to the presence of a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or other public place, an accident occurs by which—
a. personal injury is caused to a person other than the driver of that mechanically propelled vehicle, or
b. damage is caused—
i. to a vehicle other than that mechanically propelled vehicle or a trailer drawn by that mechanically propelled vehicle, or
ii. to an animal other than an animal in or on that mechanically propelled vehicle or a trailer drawn by that mechanically propelled vehicle, or
iii. to any other property constructed on, fixed to, growing in or otherwise forming part of the land on which the road or place in question is situated or land adjacent to such land.

2. The driver of the mechanically propelled vehicle must stop and, if required to do so by any person having reasonable grounds for so requiring, give his name and address and also the name and address of the owner and the identification marks of the vehicle.

3. If for any reason the driver of the mechanically propelled vehicle does not give his name and address under subsection (2) above, he must report the accident.

4. A person who fails to comply with subsection (2) or (3) above is guilty of an offence.

The Road Traffic Act applies to anywhere the public has access, so a private supermarket car park would be subject to it.

It shouldn't be more hassle than sending them the footage, I certainly couldn't see the need to attend as it is irrefutable. If that was my car I would hope you would report it and if I was in the OP's position I certainly would.

UPDATE - the owner of the car that was hit has made contact with me .He had not noticed any damaged as he doesn't use the car much .But I have made arrangement to give him the footage he was very appreciative

I would think he was, as would we all be if it was our car.

I have no sympathy with anybody on here who wouldn't leave a note at least, if their car gets damaged and nobody leaves a note it will be karma.

It's a criminal offence not to report an accident and I highly doubt the driver has reported it and unless someone has a memory like mines where they seem to recall all aspects of a car, including number plate then I doubt someone else has done it.

If the car is still parked in the same spot, it's highly likely that the person that owns it doesn't know it's happened yet and as you've got he evidence and would be surely pissed off if that was you, i think you should be contacting the police and passing them a copy of the evidence.

Edit - I see the owner has contacted you, but I do think you should still give the footage to the Police yourself. They will probably want to talk to you.

+1 The inconvenience doesn't matter, you do what's right - as to what is 'right', you have to let your conscience guide you
