Multi Car Insurance.

If you've got a multi car policy, do you always have 0 NCB on your second car?

Been phoning around over the last week and have been told that i can only apply my NCB to one car.

Seems a bit of a con as the cost of insuring the second car will never go down.

My Z4 with 9 years NCB is £530, to add a 1.6 Suzuki Vitara it takes the quote to £1100.

I am with Admiral, and they reflect my NCD on two policies even though I accrued the NCD on one car... Not sure what happens when I leave, they have always been the cheapest thus far!

NCB mirroring seems to be a major PITA. Admiral would not do it for me.

I moved my NCB to the Zed as it gave me the biggest saving and started again on the S-Max. At my ripe old age the S-Max with 1yr NCB was the grand total of £215! The Zed, with 10yrs NCB was £350ish

I went with Direct line as they did the best price by a fair chunk when I called, probably to retain the business. (We have 3 cars, 4 pets and the house insurance with them) It's just the messing about on the phone that annoys me.

I can perhaps offer a bit of experience here. Like the OP, when I bought a second car I had to start from scratch with zero NCB but Admiral mirrored my NCB from the ///M which was about 9 or 10 years worth. However when the policy came round to renewal I found that splitting the policy again worked out cheaper than the Admiral renewal price. I also tried a "new" Admiral quote from a comparison site and it was still cheaper to split the insurance. So I kept my second car on Admiral which is now building up a separate NCB and moved the ///M to Classic Line. Overall it saved me about £100 a year IIRC, taking the annual cost to about £750 from £850. I'll review it every year though.

I've just left Admiral Multi Car.

Renewal quote wasn't satisfactory, so I went to comparison sites.

Z4MC (26yrs, 3 points, 6 NCB) = £465
Astra (26yrs, 3 points, 0 NCB) = £410

Admiral matched the individual quotes but refused to offer any multi car "discount". As I understand the multi car insurance is a bit of a con, Seems you can always get cheaper (or as cheap) individual quotes elsewhere. No price advantage from the multi car policy.

The guy at Admiral says they only offer a multi-car discount if they haven't price matched a different quote.

I have 3 seperate policies all withthe RAC.
Which means I have 3 seperate NCB's ......

I just feel that with a multi car policy, if I prang one, Im screwed with the other 2 .... may just be me though because I dont trust insurance companies.

For example ..... I didn't know about the "extra" classification that had slipped in ..... if you travel to work every day, thats SDP plus commuting, but if that work is in your customers office and not your own, then its SDP plus commute plus business.
Its the little things that are designed to screw you ..... :D

Some good replies.

So, If I've got 2 seperate policies and bump the Suzuki Vitara, do i have to declare this claim on the Z4 policy as well.

thats a good question ......

3 policies with RAC, if I prang one, do I have to declare it on the others .... hmmmmm technicaly by claiming on one, they already know :D
