MPG driving through europe?

Hi all, Planning a pretty big road trip for this summer. Will be ending up in Murcia, Southern Spain :D

It will be a 3000 mile round trip and Im just deciding on which car to do it in. I have my 3.0i Z4 but also have my parents spare car Renault Megane 1.4

Only driven in Italy & Sicily so not sure what the road network in France and Spain are like. We will be in no rush whatsoever so 60-70mph will be the speed on motorways.

Im planning on 35mpg? Is this reasonable to expect?

The Megane would easily manage that figure. Another slight problem that I have.

My car insurance is 9000 miles per year, which runs out the week Im planning on getting back from holiday. I will be approx 2500 miles over that, how much of a problem will that be?

I'd abosolutely love to drive the Z through Europe and visit little villages on the way down, drive through Barcelona at night with the roof down etc etc. :headbang:

Do it in style-doit it in the z!

Ive been away but last i checked u only had the optionof roof down! :poke: only kidding- glad it seems sorted!

35mpg driving at those speeds would be easy, you can get that mpg going a good 10mph faster than that

There's no competition really, I'd hate to do that kind of journey in a Megane, I'd love to do it in my Z4

It would be even better if you could change radio volume from the steering wheel too :poke:

i would think you will be nearer to 40 than 35mpg if you will only be at cruising speed :)

Personally i would inform the insurance and get the limited mileage increased, i cant see it costing much extra.

What are the chances!?

I've been planning on a trip around europe in my Z. I'm calculating fuel prices based on 25mpg average as I'm looking to go find some top-gear type best driving roads so will be more than just cruising for some of it :driving:

I might have to pm you with some questions later, as I've only just started looking into it, but need to look at details, whats needed/country etc...

35mpg sounds perfectly reasonable for a mixture of 60-70mph cruises and some Alpine blasts  While cruising you should be in the 40's :)

Before you go though id definitely give it a half-service for optimum MPG and peice of mind:
Check Tyres (+air pressures, if you're just doing motorway i'd put in an extra 2psi as the tyres wont be getting as warm), Brakes (+ fluid), Oil ( +take at least 1l spare), Wipers and Washer fluid (Lots of bugs!), Air filter, spark plugs (make sure theyre brown - id then give them a clean).

Plus make sure you have all your lights working, dipped beam defelectors, high vis vest, warning triangle, first aid kit etc! Bloody continentals!!

You know you'd get frustrated if you did it in the Megane

Yep I would have thought that 35mph is obtainable at those speeds.

We took the Z round Europe last year, clocked up 2,400 miles and managed 29mpg - although when on the autoroutes and autobahns I wasn't sitting at 60-70mph.... ;)

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I know it really is a no brainer... Was just thinking it was maybe a litytle too far to do in the Z.

And yes....the roof is still down only, Im resorting to spending the summer in Spain over the  Getting the roof stripped off next week, gave the motor housing a knock the other day, LOADS of water came out the drain and the roof temporarily works for 2 up and down motions then died.

Herminator just lost another £5 :poke:

Last month did a raodtrip to frace- paris. Did about 1500miles round trip. I was in my //MR pretty much roof down driving all the time. I drove with decent speed keeping to speed limit and managed to average about 27mpg. So if i can get that on the M i'm sure u can easily get close to 40mpg if are going to be cruising at said speeds. Dont forget the roads are much better whihc means lower resistance and hence better mileage. have a nic etrip.

I recently had to increase my annual mileage for my insurance as I've used it more than I thought I would. Didn't cost much at all.
