MPG difference between Coupe and Roadster?

Reading the thread about the Hybrid car reaching over 1,000 miles on one tank and the way they did it made me wonder something.

70MPH cruising on a motorway/freeway, would a Roadster with the roof down use more fuel than a Coupe due to drag?

Might only be a slight difference but i think there's a possibility that the Roadster would use a little more than the Coupe due to drag.

I think you'd probably be surprised by how much a difference it makes. Just driving with the windows down in a normal car can have such an effect on drag that the fuel efficiency drops by something like 10%*. I cant remember the exact figures, but if the increase in drag is in any way comparable to driving with the windows down then I would suspect you could see quite a difference. Of course BMW probably designed it so aerodynamically its not like driving around having a sail up :) but there must still be a significant difference between the two in that scenario.

*btw - I guessed 10% - I seem to remember it being far higher than that ;-)

Driving with a window open however creates a pressure inside the cabin which causes the drag. In a roadster you do not have that pressure so that argument does not work there.

another coupe v roadster. I always like this rift. more fun. I've a roadster and i love it with this warm weather. Now if u have AC on it will cost u 10% more on fuel, if u have windows down the same effect perhaps. if u have top down a little more perhaps. But who the hell cares. WOuld u really care if a Coupe gives u 22mpg and roadster 20mpg. in real sense its about 9 miles per tank. if u average 1000 miles a month then about 50-60miles less in a roadster than coupe. BIG DEAL. I would put my top down anyday. listen to engine noise, get some stares from people and appreciating the car. COupe- NO no no

Fuel consumption may be more on thre roadster because of the extra drag, but the added enjoyment you get from top down driving makes it a worth while sacrifce! :poke: :D

Also given that two near identical roadsters can return differing MPG - ie 2 engines off the same production lines can perform differently, and also the driver can make a HUGE difference.

who cares? not me :D

None of it matters any way! You have to love what you drive and it is clear, all in here drive what they love. I am a roadster girl, give me top down after a hectic day at work, and the cares of the day just lift away as the top goes down. We all get compliments on our cars because they look so great, as we are such nice people too! :driving:

I don't care either, but it just made me wonder.

By the way, a mate of mine disagrees with me about the coupe also. He loves roadsters! He is a truck driver and he likes the view he gets from his cab when by a roadster when a girl is driving with the roof down! :P

So .. are you saying that Coupe drivers are not nice people? :poke: :fuelfire:

No, she's saying roadster drivers are girls! :poke: :P

Bit of fun!

Back to topic, I can't find anything on the net about this either as far as MPG goes. What about performance with the roof up or down?

(Bored at work!!) :P

I would have thought the extra weight of the roof system would make a slight difference? But as y'all have said, who cares!!

All about the attention seeking with the roof down.

Weight of the roof system????? I dont think the motor/canvas weigh much at all!

I thought the coupe hard a larger kerb weight than the roadster?
