Depends what you are going to do with it. Personally I just got too old to be stirring puddings all day. I swore I would never drive an auto and now I have two and doubt I would ever go back having made the switch.

The straight six is lovely mated with the auto box. Silky smooth and effortless. Ok, it's a tad slower and less economical but it more than makes up for it in effortless driving pleasure IMO :)

+1 auto box is perfect for the 3.0 litre - really comes into it's own. Cruise control with the auto is magic, as it changes up and down to maintain near perfect speed stability even on steep inclines.

No fiddling with gears at little roundabouts or in slow traffic, you can never roll backwards on hillstarts and you can hold the gf's hand for the entire journey and win browney points.

I get 23ish mpg on short journeys and it creeps up to mid thirties on longer runs. Never been on a proper motorway haul in it so I think 36 is the highest I've seen it so far.

yep . hard to disagree with above .
had approx 15 autos of varying brands in last 20 years & the BMW 3.0 6cyl with auto/tip/paddleshift does everything & more you could ever want on a performance car .
a great shame they didn't do the M version with it
