MPG & Auto Stop/Start

I normally only get 30 mpg in my car, cos most of my journeys are short, or on crap rural roads. Recently also I've noticed the start/stop not working and was assuming it was the battery too low.

Today I had to drive to see my mum and dad (150 miles away) so we dumped the dogs on mother in law and took the Z4. Drove like a saint, speed limit all the way (probably my most sensible drive ever, and I kept it up for the whole journey...both ways!)

So, 300 miles round trip.

On board computer, instead of say 29.7 mpg etc, now shows 42.4 mpg!!!!! I know that will plummet again, and had I been going faster it wouldn't be 42, but I'm really happy with that. (its the on board computer, so probably not 100% accurate, but I'm happy with it). Showed 41.5 when we got there, but used cruise on the way back, so wonder if that helped?

Also, when we got home tonight I tried the start/stop and it worked, so my theory about the battery was correct I think.

Admittedly this isn't a great report, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

Another observation that might be of use is that the 2nd Severn bridge now takes cards for payment, instead of being cash only. Didn't even have to enter a pin number! Been like it for a while I think, but my first time today.

Re: the bridge... Card payment without PIN nos are soon to be the norm for small amounts, our machine at work already does this and it's over a year old. Again, not a great report

Good mpg. I did 300 miles yesterday, NOT I repeat NOT driving like a saint (read quite a few WOT and higher speed driving) and got 34mpg over a mix of roads. I have had 40 from it but you have to drive in a way I wasn't raised to... :)

The way you drive plays a significant role..when i drive sensibly without wide open throttle and shifting early i can get around 38mpg whereas on more spirited driving it drops to 34 mpg in similar conditions.
