Motoring article celebrates demise of Z4

Oh well, not everyone likes the Z4 (a given), but to pretty much pan the Z3 and both versions of the Z4, with the exception of the 'M' versions, seems a bit harsh. I notice it mentions the sdrive31i as the top of the line e89, no mention of the 35is, but that could just be that it was never available in NZ?
Kind of reads like a hater's history of Z cars, but a history nonetheless...

There's a good few convertibles out there to choose from at a whole range of prices , I think only the Z4 offers something for every pocket with very few niggles or failings to be concerned about that would cost big money to sort , even a new roof motor aint that much on a E85
After trying a good number out I would have to say the 3.0Si whether Coupe or roadster has the combination of affordability ,speed ,frugality , relative comfort ( especially the roadster if the tyres are right ) & even with big miles on clock them doesn't need to hurt financially to run them :wink:
Not read the article but id like to hear what alternatives pound for pound were offered up
 
Meh, I'm old enough to know that the truly important perspective on this car is singularly my own. I love it, that's all that matters to me. They can pan a car they never owned all they want, makes no difference to how I feel about mine.
 
To be fair I never wanted a Z3, at all. Even the now iconic ///M was deeply flawed (or floored when the arse end was torn by the trans-axle torque :wink: ). They were really, really leaky (a mate kept a sponge for baling out his) and not well bolted together.

When the Z4 came out I wasn't a big fan of the styling for several years, then with time I loved it and bought one. The alternative being a Boxster with the threat of big engine bills (read all the for-sale ad's, everybody is keen to list all the 'usual' engine work that's been done and the costs!) or a crazy boy S2000, mamby-pamby MX5 or cruiser (SLK).

I've not driven an E89 but am sure they must have moved the game on although I do agree that the styling is a bit safe and the tin-top only design is a shame.

Pity is that the article didn't weigh it against the alternatives really :|
 
So it's official the E85 E86 with the 3.0 lump were the best of the bunch, because that's how it reads in that article. As said cars are a subject to all men some find them good some find them shite, if all the Zs were crap why did they sell so many

Agree with Maniac, more about selling an article than a valued contribution to motoring journalism
 
I guess the reporter thinks he can slag the Z4 a bit now it is no longer on sale.

Just hope there is a stonking return to form with the Z5, and BMW won't let him have one after his negativity! :lol:

Doesn't matter where the journalist is from (although if the point you're making is that if Clarkson had written it, it would have had more people up in arms, or nodding sagely, I agree), it is just one writer's opinion.
I do agree with the comment that maybe he felt safe slagging it off since it's now going out of production.
We had a motoring journo who was obviously terrified of losing favour with the car makers that provided him with early release test drives etc, so every single review for every single car was always positive. If anything wasn't good, it was described in such neutral 'doesn't really matter' type language, you'd think the cars were made from recycled unicorns, and powered by rainbows.
Until that model was supereceded by a new one, in which case suddenly all the flaws and problems of the previous (no longer for sale) version were discussed a bit more candidly.
I sure as hell wouldn't have bought a new car based on his reviews :thumbsdown:

Yup.
Luv my 3.0si E85.
Always liked it's compact size compared to the E89.
Just like the Ford Mustang, they evolved larger and heavier.
