MOT - where?

What do you reckon?

BMW £54.50
Local Council £54.50
Kwik Fit £30
Halfords Autocentre £27.50

Or any other ideas? Looking to get it done fairly rapid too

i got mine done last week by my local back street garage in Derby (which i have used for over 5 years now) - £25.99

Personally i would get the cheapest place possible... especially if you know everything is ok - as its more a formality that has to be done.

I bête mine done at my local indy, costs £45 but they must do the MOT and don't try to fleece me with other work they recommend should be done. That said, I've used Kwik Fit in the past and had no issues.

Just be aware they, like Halfords, offer cheap MOT's with a view to getting work. You're far more likley to get a fails and advisories or be told that you need new pads and disks, etc.

The trouble with taking the car to BMW for an MOT is that, IME, they delight in finding other things that need doing! Luckily, as an MOT is a standardised test, it shouldn't matter where you get it done and no-one would ever get away with claiming that the resale value of your car could be affected if it didn't have a history of MOTs carried out by the main agent.

For the past several years I've taken my cars to a small chain that only did MOTs - no exhausts, no brakes, no welding - they let you book timed slots on-line so it's done while-you-wait and, if you book in advance, you can get up to 50% discount - so if you book 90+ days in advance, the MOT is £27.

The only caveat to this is that they've now started doing minor servicing and repairs so I'll have to wait and see if things change, but past experience has been good as the one time they found something - a rear bulb had gone (and I'd checked them before leaving home) - they were happy for me to nip up to Halfords and buy & fit a replacement. Went back down, showed them it was now working and they issued the certificate, no fuss, no bother, just excellent customer service.

I think I'd have risked Halfords before Kwik Fit, so many stories on the Internet about them. I think I would have asked my local dealer if he had any deals on, last time I did I didn't pay a penny!

Andi.

local place ... 40 quid ... cash no cards, no questions asked. tbf they take it to a place around the corner and so far they have been fine with a whole bunch of people's car ive know.

I've used Mr Clutch in Derby for the past few years. They are nation-wide - see website. Only costs £21, but is not a back-street service. After all, you do want them to pick up anything that's unsafe, surely? So far mine have always passed.

I paid £40 at local dealership earlier this year... :?

I've used my local (Crawley) Halfords 3 or 4 times for this and that and I'd have no hesitation giving the car over to them. The lads there are top notch and genuinely want to do a good job. Can't say if that's a nationwide expectation but I can only judge as I find.
