MOT - What exactly is it?

OK, Ministry of Transport, I figured out that its a regular road safety check but how often is it done, how detailed is it and how much does it cost?

Sorry about the silly question but we only check vehicles over 10 years old if they are going to a new owner, maybe a bad thing, I don't know.

Annual test, costing just under £50. Covers pretty much anything you can think of from a safety perspective from tyres, streering brakes, lights, structural integrity, even down to seatbelts. Other main area is emission testing.

Handbook for testers here if you want a scan:

and it now costs £54 :(

Yes - but nobody pays that much. Most places around here offer it for between £40 and £50, presumably as a loss leader to get the repair business

That would raise a lot of hackles over here but it would be a good thing in the long run. Most people get stuff checked out privately when purchasing used so this would make it mandatory ( +move the cost to the seller), and improve road safety.

Thanks for the info
