MOT Query

Hi all,

This might be a daft question regarding MOTs and the COVID extension by 6 months.

The MOT on my M140i is due to expire on 10/8. Normally I will have the MOT done the same time as the cars service and usually do this just under a month before the MOT is due to expire so middle of July.

Looking on the GOV.UK website it says they will extend an MOT's expiry date under COVID 7 days before its due to expire so in my case around 3/8 which will take the MOT on until Feb 2021.

I imagine until the date the MOT is extended the old expiry date will still stand, does this mean if you have your MOT done upto a month earlier that I could still have it done in July as officially as yet the MOT hasn't been extended?

You can have an MOT done at any time - people often do to sweeten the deal selling the car.

Regarding MOT now or in six months I think you have to ask yourself what its worth? For my Caterham which was due in April the GOV have rolled it into October, So if the lockdown is stopped and I take it off SORN as long as I put it back on SORN in October I've had a free MOT year and its first trip out in 2021 will be for test.

Our 5 Series daily workhorse was due its MOT at the start of this month. It was booked in but the garage have pushed the date back a couple of times - not an issue because its covered as the GOV rolled that retest date on six months as well. That said I'll have it done in a couple of weeks because it keeps the patten of MOT service and tax as I like it - (not being stuck getting a test to tax it!) In the back of my mind I'm thinking will they roll all the tests for a year or at some point (well for six months) will cars that are due a test that month normally and cars which will now be due a test due to the rolling on all be trying to book at the same time.

I foresee a rush to get tests done. No reminders unless your garage alerts you a easy pickings for the cops as it wont be on most peoples minds. I'm happier to have a full test than wait the extra five months since the garage I use is back at work.

If you have confidence in the car passing what's the problem or what's the six months extra worth?

Two of our cars have just had their MOTs extended in the last few days. My local workshop has just reopened and are glad for the business as most people don't know yet. So one is already in for service and MOT, and on Wednesday I pick it up whilst dropping in the next for service and MOT.

Thanks for the reply Harry, makes sense what you're saying and I'm like you in that I would prefer to have the car MOTd at its usual time when it's serviced rather than faffing around doing the service and MOT separately. If I take advantage of the 6 months extension that takes the MOT to February which at that time the cars in winter storage. I'm not that fussed on the extension, just prefer to get the MOT done in the summer months as usual. I'll ask the garage to do the MOT in July as normal and hopefully should be ok :)

Thanks Nick, that's good to know then  I wasn't sure how strict all of this is or whether the MOT extension dates were set in stone under the circumstances.
