MOT hints and tips

Taking the Z4M (doh :poke: @adamski) for an MOT this friday. Going to try and see if they will let me watch! Its the first time I am going to use the particular MOT centre but hopefully should not be too much drama! BMSSurrey are checking the car over and doing it for me :thumbsup: Any pointers welcome...
 
Ask them not to do the brake test for your ///M on the rollers. The ///M has an ///M LSD and the brake test should be carried out on the road as it is not a great idea to brake test an LSD on rollers, risk of damaging the diff. I can see this ///M thing having some mileage :D

I have no specific experience but there's a lot of people out there that advise this, and mot testers should be made aware if you have a slip diff on your car.

putting the car on rollers isn't a issue for the time tested, the clutch packs are not going to overheat in that short period of time/speed tested- bmw themselves will put your car on brake testing machine if you take it to a dealer for an MOT. A brake test on the road is a great way for them to thrash your car round the block and is totally unnecessary. Id prefur the car to be tested on the machine every single day of the week and have done so since i got the car 7 years ago, the diff is in perfect working order, it has far more stress placed on it during hard driving than that machine will ever place on it.
 
BMS don't do the MOT's on site mate, i think they will take it to a garage down the road to an MOT station or something :thumbsup:
 
As I said, it's a risk, quite possibly a small one, but one I prefer not to take all the same.

I have taken to running a data logger for situations such as this and tell them about it before hand. Call me paranoid 8)

Yes indeed true, they made me aware of this.
 
None of my cars go on the rollers - the brake test is done in the service road behind the MOT test station and I watch to make sure they don't harm my car! The guy who tests my car builds and races rally cars as well as restoring and racing classic cars so he's highly sympathetic to my OCD :D

Edit - I didn't prompt the mechanic - the first time I went there with my Westfield he asked if it had an LSD for precisely this reason and volunteered that he wouldn't put it on the rollers.

As above the MOT centres I used just do a quick acceleration followed by brakes in the service road, no need for a test drive.
 
I thought the LSD not being tested on the roller was because it could jump off or something?

Last MOt I had, I took the car to a local MOT place and had it done. I asked them not to brake test on the rollers. They said no worries and did it on the road outside. It was a quiet road, and I could see what they were doing.

Passed fine, without advisories.
 
I might be in the minority but when my cars need an MoT I just take it to the place local to work and leave it there for them to get on with and pick up an hour or so later when it's done...... (even when the 997TT Cab was due its first Mot)......
 
Just got back from BMSSurrey. What a bunch of nice guys. Very easy to deal with, no hesitation recommending them totally trustworthy :thumbsup:

Lee also took onboard my concerns over rolling road and potential diff damage. So they tested this another way. 8)
 
Yea i have been using them a few months now, a great bunch of guys who know exactly what they are talking about and don't charge you over the odd's for the work!

Best specialist i have used to date. :)
 
@hopz,

I think we also spoke about you / your car as although they don't make a very proactive effort on joining forums etc, they get a lot of work through recommendation via forums.
