MOT due. Use BMW or go elsewhere?

My MOT is due soon and BMW called to remind me. If I go with BMW I get biscuits, hopefully a chance to perv at the new M3 and I guess they will enact any technical bulletins that I may be unaware of. I am also worried about trade in time if I go elsewhere.

Is this reason enough to go with BMW or should I try somewhere else. I noticed Protyre advertise around £30 cheaper for an MOT.

Never had either of my Z's serviced or MOTD with BMW, the cost is prohibitive. I have a good sports car garage were i live that mainly works as a after market Porker garage and they do my Z. http://www.twg-bmwservicing.co.uk

my last mot was at a VW dealer, down to cost, they had a special offer on that BMW could ot get aywhere near

I go elsewhere for the MOT and go to BMW for the service - i like to do this so the car ( and what BMW has done) gets cross checked by someone else.

I normally book my MOTs at a specialist place that only does MOTs - so no mileage for them in finding unnecessary work - and they give discounts if you book 90+ days in advance

Currently £27.42 at halfords autocentre, had mine done at the weekend :D

If it's the Zeds first MOT get it done by BMW before the warranty expires.

I still take the Z3 to BMW as my dealer always look after the car . A friend took her Z3 to Halfords and they forced the electric hood down manually snapping the hoops, they then put the broken bits together using gaffer tape and zip ties and denied any knowledge. Good enough reason for me never to use general car maintenance places.

Tim.

I have always used a trusted local place - it happens to be a tyre centre that also do servicing and MOT's and charge £35 - never heard of a BMW charging any less than the full £50+ - can't see it devaluing your service record if some Mot certs are non dealer.

I had my last MOT (which was the cars first) at BMW. They charge the full £54.85. Last time it needed 2 new tyres and these were replaced through the tyre insurance. It shouldn't need that this time round as all have been replaced over the last year. I have always had servicing there as I have the service pack but I recently had rear brake pads replaced by an independent and this saved me about £160 compared to BMW. It was just that as BMW had actually phoned me so I was unsure whether to use them or not but for a £30 saving I will give elsewhere a try. I will however check it's the kind of place where I can watch them perform the MOT.

+1 place near me offers a 'no pass no fee' service and only does MOTs, plus two for £70. No brainer really.

i use my local halfords auto centre.... costs 30 quid and the waiting area is in a big glass box next to the mot ramp.... all latest equipment and flush to floor ramps. thats all i need.

Audi up here in the NE have it sussed I think.
Have the car serviced by them and at
Mot time the charge £50 and give a "free" mot insurance for the following year.

It about high time BMW dealers woke up I'm my opinion!

Top dollar for just doing the job doesn't cut the mustard
It might have been when any little Herbert would take the car for a brake test but not now.

Normally take mine to an MOT only place for the reason they have no interest in failing, but took to BMW this year as it was only £35 so worth the risk.

They failed it at first then passed straight away after adjusting one of the headlights, all at no extra cost :o

Even more surprising as they tried to charge me £40 a few years ago to adjust the lights on my old Z4 when I complained they were shite and I couldn't see where I was going.

It really depends on the individual BMW dealer, unfortunately they're not all of a standard and hence tarnishes the rest. I've often thought of taking the Z3 to a BMW indi but I just don't trust anyone to look after the car. I've used the Halfords, National Tyres type places and the car has always been damaged or left in an oily state. Having said that I've found Peugeot and Vaxuhall even worse. There are some BMW dealers who strive for good customer care with a view to keeping customers long term for which I will happily pay a few quid more, to me alot cheaper than having dents pulled out and scratches resprayed after each service.

I think you've shot wide of the point Tim. Or is that Tim Tim now ? :D
I was highlighting the fact that Audi here in the NE offer a insurance policy for the next years possible mot failure. They do honour it as well. We had a spring failure on my wife's Audi and they paid the bill. Top marks for them. Obviously it doesn't cover consumables ie tyre , brake pads!j

On your point of Halfords and nat tyres, I wouldn't let them oil a pram!

Council depot for me. No interest in finding fake faults (not saying other places do....) as they don't repair. Full price but worth the independent assessment
