I've had a text message from BMW today to say my Z4 is coming up to it's MOT.
It is still under BMW warranty until June 2011. Is it best to take it to BMW for the MOT ? - Do I HAVE to while it's under warranty ?

As far as I'm aware, the car is A1 and should fly through, but, is there anything I should watch out for in the MOT that should it fail, the warranty will cover ?

Any advice appreciated.

BMW want you to take it to them for the same reason that Kwik-Fit want you to take it to them - they're both looking to sell extra work to you based on a inspection carried out during the MOT.

However, if it's under warranty, there should be an MOT failure clause which means stuff that's found during the MOT (and not mentioned to you in any previous service) will be fixed under warranty (excluding consumables of course).

And no, you do not have to take the car to BMW for it's MOT.

I got the car in June this year from Cooper BMW in Reading, and got the standard 12 months warranty.
It has not been due a service since I got it (Oil service due in 2000 miles I think)

So you reckon that having it MOT'd at my local indy station (Who I know I can trust) will NOT invalidate the warranty ?
Equally, if I take it to my local BMW dealer for the MOT, anything they find (excluding tryes / brakes) should be done under warranty ?

That is my understanding (based on a new car warranty, but the AUC one might have different terms), and I have taken advantage of special MOT offers from BMW dealers in the past, as it was good fun to get an MOT for £40 when I know they can't be making any money charging £that amount for an hour's work - especially when anything they find wrong will be done either under warranty or at a specialist :P

I'll have to find out my warranty and have a look see if it says about MOT's.
In the meantime, if anyone has the same 12 months warranty and knows already if and indy MOT will not invalidate it - let me know :thumbsup:

Just been going through some of my documents (Not found warranty yet)
I have the currant MOT certificate - and it does NOT expire until 31st March 2011 !

Why on earth are BMW texting me to book it in for an MOT over 4 months before it is due ???
 
If your car is still under 3 years old, the date of registration in the system will show it needs MOT very soon.
 
Bought my MC from synters they actually told me to bring the car in maybe 3 weeks before the mot was due that way if it failed on anything they had time to fix it as it would all be done under warranty with no cost to myself , so i did paid for the mot which can only be charged at the same rate at every garage so basically you have nothing to loose bringing it to bmw
 
The MOT will not invalidate your warranty.
The only bit I wasn't sure about was whether MOT failure items were covered in the AUC warranty.

How old is the car? I'm guessing this is not it's first MOT if you've got a certificate with another date on it?
Maybe a previous owner/BMW dealer decided to sell it with a full year's MOT and did it in March this year?

If normal wear and tear items, such as discs and pads, then MOT failure will not be covered by AUC warranty.

Correct, and that's what I said in an earlier post (i.e. consumables are not covered) :thumbsup:

The car is registered 30th December 2003.
39k on the clock - Oil service due in 2k.

My concern comes from a bad experience a few years ago with Audi.
I took my A4 in for a service, and was told that pads and discs needed replacing. I told them not to do anything until I'd spoken to the garage I had it from earlier the same year.
I did speak to the indy where I got the A4 from and was told they had put new pads on the car before I collected it.
When I picked the car up, I drove straight round to the garage where I got it from and they checked it over and showed me that the pads were hardly worn at all.
Over running the story, I noticed that there was Diesel all down the rear of the car below the filler cap. HIGHLY suspicious and when I quizzed them on it they couldn't offer any explanation but offered me a free valet.
Never went back there again.

Perhaps I should have more faith in the local BMW dealer not to rinse me for the hell of it.
