MOST EXPENSIVE WIPER BLADE

Changing the passenger side wiper blade yesterday on our Series 1 and ended up with paying £75 xs for a replacement windscreen!
Had taken off the old blade off and the arm (must have caught it somehow) snapped against the windscreen and shattered a large area.
Lesson learned - put something on the screen to prevent it smacking against the glass.
Bad news was the replacement blade was not the right one.
Anyone else done something as stupid?

That is all.
These things happen. Lesson learnt.
On the plus side, with new wipers and a new windscreen, you'll have perfect forward vision :D

I did exactly this last year, as have at least a few others judging by the response to thread I started. You're not alone, it is an easy mistake to make, and you won't do it again

Thanks Bing, I'm sure it won't happen again. Whilst making the insurance claim the very kind Autoshield lady said its not uncommon and admitted she had done the same thing. How many wiper blades have I changed in 55 years of motoring? Maybe old age was the problem.

This happened to my son. Carefully lifting up the wiper on his Series 1 when washing his car the wiper blade came off in his hand and the wiper dropped only about 50mm and cracked his window screen. To say he was annoyed is an under statement. :x

Must just be the perfect shape arm and impact point to shatter the screen. Unfortunate feature

Must remember as we have a 1 series in the drive.

Unless you need a new screen........

I was just about to say bing did this!

Could be worse... A few years back a member tried pulling off their gear nob and headbutted and smashed their windshield :o

I did see someone pour boiling water on a frozen windscreen with a similar shattering effect.

Andi.

There is that

The springs are very strong and the impact point is right on the curve at the end of the arm - small impact point, great force, inevitable outcome. Looks like this :D :

That's an identical fracture to mine, not pretty but as its on the passenger side the car is driveable.

I am seriously considering have a 'mishap' with my windscreen as its very badly pitted / stone chipped

And when my insurance goes up next year to cover fraudulent claims, at least I'll know someone that has benefitted!

It'll be alright until you phone in the claim and the voice analysis software they use picks up the telltale signs of a fraudulent claim :(

yes... oak worktop through the windscreen of the 4x4.... had to drive back from Birmingham with a small hole in it about the size of a 50p and some massive cracks across the screen. it took a 2 weeks for autoglass to get another so also took in a trip to wales for the weekend where we played how big can we make the crack!
