........meets the eye.

2 years ago when I picked up the M there was some serious clunking from the front when I applied right lock ......
I messed around with loads of stuff and was well happy when I pressed the sport button and the clunking went away ....... hmmmmmm
posted it on here and got loads of comments about how all the sport button does is sharpen up the throttle etc ...... anyway clunking was gone so I promply forgot about it.

Last month I took the car out of storage (was doing some building work at the house) ..... and there was this loud clunking from the front on right hand lock. Ckecked everything, but it wasnt going away, I was getting ready to drop the full steering rack and swap it for a new one.
Then, I just happened to be reading my old posts ..... and came across the sport button thing .....

went out today, pressed the sport button, and the steering is now silky smooth and clunk free .......

hahahahaha say what you like, the sport button does a wee bit more than twaek the throttle .......... :D

Interesting, I know the sport button on the wife's mini sharpens up the throttle response AND stiffens the steering.

Could be something in this button theory.

Copied from a mini tech spec...

"Another key difference is the introduction of an upgraded electric power steering system, the sharpness of which can be increased by pressing a "Sport" button in front of the gear lever (both auto and manual); additionally, the "Sport" button adjusts the response of the accelerator, and in conjunction with automatic transmission, also allows the engine to rev almost to the redline before changing gear."

I know the non 'm' variants of the Z have electronic steering (EPS) so its worth investigating further

The steering noticeably stiffens on the zed with sport on, exactly the same kind of changes as when I press it in my GFs mini ... I'm sure the steering rate decreases too and requires less lock but that it just me thinking about going round tight corners - no science there. Lol

Edit .... Sorry misread also. Ignore, I'm poverty non-m

///M's have hydraulic steering, and the sport button has no effect on this.

This is what I understood, but OP's experiences would suggest otherwise.

Maybe it doesn't impact the steering, but alters suspension in some way?

Teamemmenracing, any chance of a quick video, firstly showing the clunking on right lock with sport off, then activating the sport button and showing the clunking to disappear?

There's no electronic links to the suspension, so I can't see how that can be changed at the press of a button.

:D ........
is it repeatable ...... well its happened twice now.
and Ive read hunners of comments about how it has no effect whatsoever.

When I say clunk, I mean hammer blow kind of clunk which can be heard across the road ... and it can be felt through the steering wheel, it felt like there were broken teeth on the steering rack.

Im talking when the car is stationary here ......

Press the sport button and immediately the steering is one finger silky smooth.

Im wondering if the hydraulic pump is controlled by a line of software, which changes in "sport" ...... ie a different mode.

cant do a vid just yet cos Im back at work in Norway

Just read that the hydraulic power steering system adjust itself to car speed and dynamics, therefore Im thinking there is something going on in the pump that offers more or less power based on speed .......
as the sport button sharpens up throttle response in much the same way, Im wondering if indeed, the pump is controlled by a different line of software in sport mode

Your car is broken. Probably some electrical fault/short that is screwing the voltages on the steering pump actuator

Thats the first realistic answer Ive heard :D
Ill be under the front at the weekend checking connections

Well on my drive back to work today i played around with the Sport button while stopped at a traffic light, it didn't change the weight either on or off. And from what i can remember on past quick drives it doesn't change it at speed either... What can i say... :idunno:

I agree with all, on the M the Sports button does bug$$r all exept make the throttle application mopre aggressive.

If its any consolation however, I changed my steering rack 18 months ago as there was go movement and it was relatively cheap.

Përhaps have a look at the drive line, maybe the increase ion applied torque is negating that shunt?
