One of my rear springs have snapped. If I order a new OEM spring, will it not just snap another 25k miles down the line? or did they make them better?

I hear the springs are around £80 each. What sort of price can I expect for fitting?

Thanks :)

Springs are indeed around £80 from the dealer. Its a half hour job to swap one so dont pay to much. I'd go to an indi and get it done.

I was told by BMW it wont happen again yet they didnt say if they changed the springs because if they did my rear springs are now uneven as only one of mine broke.

There is every chance it will break again, but so what if the biggest worry on your car is a broken spring after 25,000+ miles? Most cars have some recurring minor problem, while the Z4 is generally bulletproof.

No information that they have in any way changed them.

If you go for other makes then they all (those I researched) lower the car by 30mm standard and 15mm on sport suspension which imho creates a lot more to think about with ride height, kerbs, potholes, realignment of geo, etc.

Fitting is a 30 minute DIY job so I suspect that amount at a dealers per side and no need to change both given the mileage.

Cheers guys. Mine already has sports suspension, so dont need another 15mm knocked off + the hastle with ride height/realign etc as mentioned.

I've asked that Joe guy at Soper BMW for a quote on 2 new springs, but might just buy one for now and have a go myself. If I fail, I'll go indy.

Now to try and find that how to for rear springs :)

Thanks

What was my exact thoughts and was the only reason I fitted Eibach springs instead of replacing my 2 snapped rears with OEM ones. Well that plus also that a set of 4 Eibachs was cheaper than a pair of rear OEM springs...

Rear springs are an easy DIY fit - it's the fronts that are a PITA

Oh, one more question if anyone knows, are the springs for the Sports suspension different to the non sports?

I've found eibachs for £160, but I'm guessing it will cost that again to fit? I've just paid for my summer holiday so I am strapped for cash! Sadly will have to do the £80 and DIY this year. I'll start saving for Eibachs in 25k miles :)

Took mine to the dealers and although out of warranty the Service Manager made a call to BMW and they fitted it for free - give it a go!

Yeah, fitting costs will vary but that's probably about right - I DIY'd mine but ran into problems with the fronts and ended up slipping my local Kwikfit blokes £20 cash-in-hand to fit my new front springs onto the struts, before refitting them onto the car myself. Also bear in mind you'll need an alignment setup after fitting springs too (another £60-100). It all adds up :(

Same here... can't remember if I needed to stage a minor tantrum, but they, Cooper Reading (with whom I have had a very rocky relationship) either supplied or fitted for free. This too was out of warranty.

I always ask the question with any OEM part failure - have won more than I've lost and it costs nothing to try

Cheers Pawn, I'll try the Oxford BMW at lunch today as it's closer. Failing that, I might drive to the Reading one this weekend...

If it helps this isn't just a Z4 issue - friend's with E46 M3s have all had spring issues too - one is about to replace for the second or third time.

You should get the same deal from Oxford or Reading - either one should be making a call to BMW to get the part or work FOC... not sure if this is logged at BMW, if it is I'm sure it would render a visit to Reading futile. In fairness Cooper BMW have always been good on this front, it's just the quality of their work that has caused friction between us in the past.

Good luck!

Just out of interest what did Soper quote for a new rear spring? I'm about to drop Joe an email and request a load of bits

Couple of questions posed earlier:
M sport and normal springs are ifferent. Order by chassis number

Fitting rears is soooo easy. It's just me but I'd do it in 30 minutes rather than drive to the dealer once to ask and once to get it done wait 2 hours, etc.

Jack car, axle stand wheel off
Undo lower shock mount - 1 bolt.
Press hub down by lever, foot or assistant and wriggle spring out
Refit top and bottom pads (black rubber mouldings) and clean any dirt off
wriggle spring back in while pressing hub down (watch not to stretch brake hose)
use jack to raise hub to align shock bolt
refit wheel

Stand back and admire handiwork and stare at the £50 to £100 and wonder what to spend it on

Thanks Jeeper :)

I'm going to go to the dealer at lunch and ask how much for fitting etc, say I'm disappointed etc and see what price they come up with.

If that fails, I'll buy one from Soper (or if they have one already, the Oxford dealership) and do it myself. I found Adey's how to http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=15569&p=228117&hilit=rear+spring+DIY#p228117 so I'll use that.

I'll reply on this around 2pm when I'm back - not exactly going to be a chore driving looking out the window! Blue skies!!! :D

:!: Epic fail. :!:

I moaned about the springs and the best the guy could come up with is "they're worse on 3 series" in the hope that would make me happy..

They had one for £86 and in stock so I bought it *sigh*

I even asked if they come with a better guarentee than 25k miles. "2 years mate" was the reply.

I have a spare you could have had for £20 !. quite recent as well as the previous owner replaced them. i also have fronts if anybody is interested?

i forgot to add this in my previous post, the rears are a doddle to replace. far easier than the fronts.
