No real evidence but nice info to talk about...

4Cyl Turbo : http://www.bmwblog.com/2008/04/09/rumoror-not-bmw-to-build-a-4-cylinder-twin-turbo-engine/

Both Hard and Soft Top: http://www.bmwblog.com/2008/04/10/you-heard-it-here-first-2009-bmw-z4-will-have-both-a-hard-and-a-soft-top/

I agree, no road car gets an 11k redline, I checked the date to see if it was April 01 it was posted on. Hmmmmm :scratchhead:

On another car forum we discussed the plausibility of having a tiny turbocharger for each cyclinder and whether it would work... the conclusion was that it wouldn't work very well as a single cyclnder would not have the exhaust gas volume to spool the turbo adequately... it would also be over complicated

With the 335i twin turbo engine and new 330i efficient dynamics then I can't see why they wouldnt use these engines to power the new z cars.

After going through 2 sets of turbos on my old Audi S4 2.7t I am a firm believer in less complex plumbing under my hood and like having normally aspirated engines.

I am definitely not interested in another set of turblows - especially if things get more complicated yet

Trouble is BMW have already intimated that the next generation of performance engines from them will be bi-turbo engines. Take the latest 1 series coupe for instance. This is because of the mix of economy and emissions.
The latest eco-warrior thinking on petrol engines will mean engines getting very complicated and all gearboxes being autos!! Oh joy!! :tumbleweed:

I have no problem with 6 cylinder bi-turbo engines.... I've grown out of 4 cylinder turbos and wanted a better soundtrack when driving :driving:

My 3.0 inline 6 can do 30mpg in general spirited use... my Nissan 200sx (240sx to those in usa) with SR20DET @ ~280hp did 20-23mpg even after a full custom remap - was quite quick though

The efficient dynamics engines have only just come out, I should imagine they will be around for a while - there will always be a 6 cylinder in the line up, you won't see porsche ditching their boxer 6 anytime soon 8)

I must try harder

Lowest I have had is 25mpg when all I did was hoon around the countryside :driving:

I'm with you Alan...
The temps that the 335 runs is not meant for a long term relationship.
Just wait a couple of years & see how many of them start to fail after warranty.

Luckily mine failed within the warranty and I traded the car in with 1500 miles left on the 50000 mile warranty. Good thing too - the turbos on the 2.7t engine had to be replaced as pairs and the engine had to be dropped out to do the replacement - for $8000 worth of parts and labor.

Lots of fun to chip your turbo and get a quick 35-40hp but not worth the long term cost at all in my book.
