More gas flow? Another stainless exhaust system for 35i/35is

As part of improving the gas flows through the engine I’ve bitten the bullet with this German Fox stainless system with lovely big collector pipes, a nice large mixer and some polished stainless cans with bazooka exhaust tips…

Will be interested to hear how it goes with no ‘quiet’ exhaust flap…. :tumbleweed:

Picture of stock 35is collector pipe for comparison..

So yes a 35is has a noisier system than a 35i but the system is still gelded by the crimped collector..

Be interesting to hear what that's like, slash tips look awesome.

Yes, big punt on a product without hearing it…I’ll try and do some recording once it’s fitted on Monday.. :tumbleweed:

Tips having a passing resemblance to an 88 mm Flak gun ..

Please do...

BTW you do realise you're fairly certifiable with all these mods to an E89 right....?

I think if I did those mods to my Kia Pride, Triumph Tina Scooter, Fiat 126 from my past then that would be certified! :tumbleweed:

Still to do a machine polish or some nice soda / CO2 blasting

Not had the nerve to tackle machine polisher..yet

What puts you off a G29 Peter..?

Or is it more a voyage of discovery and see where you can get an E89 to with the knowledge that if you want to swap out you can...? Which makes sense... imho

Long answer..

I looked at the G29 a number of times…

(I had a long running legal case which was heard at Carlisle Courts over 3 years and kept popping into Carlisle BMW)…

I took a 20i out for a weekend and had a 3 hour drive in an M40i…at the time I had my 20i MSport E89

No doubt that the G29 is a better car dynamically than the E89.

Comfort and ride is better.

Space a big improvement both cabin and boot.

Tech has obviously advanced a lot compared to the E89.

Prior to my court case being settled I couldn’t entertain one financially as someone who was coming to the end of long long set of careers..

However once my legal case was successfully concluded I could easily buy a M40i for cash..so in a different position..

But…each to their own…and..for me…

I’ve always been a ‘tinkerer’ maybe not a very successful ‘tinkerer’ and I like ‘twiddling’ with my bikes and now with cars..

Being and new, and pretty good there is a dearth of tinkering opportunities on the G29..although now some items are coming to the market albeit at cost..

I just don’t like the modern ‘design language’ with a plethora of faux styling accents, and it seems that BMW and Mercedes and to an extent Audi have all used the same computer programs ..

The E89 is very pretty both with the top up and down..the G29 looks ugly to me hood up..

So for me, spending some of the money that would have gone to a M40i on goodies to ‘enhance’ a design with ‘issues’ and to update capabilities gives me much greater satisfaction than just paying a load of cash to buy an off the shelf solution albeit a very good solution.

I’m not sure the G29 will age well..the E85 and E89 to my eyes are.

Effectively due to Covid my work plans came to an abrupt end and I have the time, money and headspace to do these things.

Another route some take is to have many cars at the same time..I did this with my bikes..at the peak I had 8 ..but you could only ride one at any time..they did look pretty in a line in my garage..

So a long ramble …if I was working full time with little time but lots of money I may have bought a G29..then another one..but I probably wouldn’t have had the time so probably wouldn’t have ever had a Z4..probably just another Audi A7…

Hope it makes some sort of sense?

Wow those cans look massive . Look forward to seeing how they perform

That's a very interesting answer B21 on your motivations! Also, can't believe you had a Fiat 126?! My family's first car, well, the 'p' version.
Back on topic, looking forward to hearing the exhaust!

Yes it was my mum's car but she allowed me to use it as required..23 tarmac ripping BHP..had a hand throttle that looked like a dip stick..took me 27 miles on the M5 to overtake an artic..happy days..

I'll try and record some before and after sounds..!

Will you be getting a remap to make max use of the improved exhaust flow?

Hi it’s currently 400 BHP on a MHD V10 stage 2+ remap on stock turbos….on stock exhaust

Shortly it will have TTE500 turbos with uprated inlet plumbing, uprated FMIC and new shiny exhaust..looking for 500 BHP…hopefully 550 BHP

Any videos of the new exhaust note?

Addition of the xpipe should be a major improvement.

Hi there, new system should be fitted Tuesday….I’ll try and do a sound / video …obviously sounds different from the car compared to a bystander..

There’s a debate as to what parts of the induction / fuel injection / engine / exhaust will limit the power where and how…

Given that I’m all in on induction bar the air box..where I may entertain the Mr 5 mod if it shows great benefits when we get to the dyno, but the exhaust system looks like it may be an issue the Fox with the big collector box seems a logical thing to do ? :tumbleweed:

So exhaust fitted and a quick test…in part limited by a front left hand buckled wheel..but that’s another story… :tumbleweed:

Nice sound..at low revs quite baritone without being a drone..higher up like a nice brass trombone…wind noise in the cabin overpowers the exhaust note so will have to wait till others hear it…

Didn’t realise that the OE exhaust system is all in one piece from the primary cats back….a bit if cutting n shutting required..

Interesting to why BMW put such a restriction in the right hand pipe that’s only opened at times in sports mode..

Tried to take some videos for the sound…try accelerating hard with a camera in hand …

Like the nice stainless bazooka tips..if size mattered…

The exhaust flap is open whenever you get on it, even in normal mode. There's no difference in opening between normal and sports mode, but the flap opens sooner when the roof is down. The official reason for the addition of the flap is just noise control, it was to prevent noise pollution.

Looks like a good system. You still have the secondary cats in place so should be OK passing an MOT.

It sounds good so far, but as you said, you really need to hear it from outside the car to get a proper idea due to the wind noise.
Did it require any additional bodging to fit on top of the cutting to merge it into the stock midpipes?

No it all lined up and seemed to fit..the chap was very careful..measure 5 times cut once..glad I didn't attempt to do it in my garage on my own..

Noted on the exhaust flap..now consigned to history..

It passed easily with those secondary cats only last time so should be no problem again..
