So, looking at the VANOS thread, it occurred to me that despite my car driving beautifully, I need to spend lots of money on it as I mine is an 80,000 mile 14 year old car (new springs done before I owned it):

Get the VANOS done - £300 (must need doing by now?)
Move the roof motor - £90 and a 500 mile round trip, or about £200 down here I think.
Front and rear shocks - so that is about £500 with me doing it.
Lollipops - £60, doing them this weekend with any luck
Auto gearbox fluid change - what, about £100? Again, I suspect it needs to be done even though it drives well.

So that is £1160 already.

Then things I would like done:
Royal steering wheel refurb - £150
Wheel refurb - £300, one is dented.
Replace runflats - £300 (despite fairly new runflats!)
Auto gearbox knob - £50 ish

Another £800.

That total is half what I paid for the car!

Or am I getting paranoid on the preventative stuff?

What have I missed out?

Lol - Well I can do your VANOS, roof motor, lollipops and ATF all at the same time for you if you want, obviously there will be a deal to be had with all that work, and it'll still be a LOT cheaper than going to an indy or god forbid, BMW...

Have a day or two in Liverpool, great place. Dock front and city centre, there is a lot to do and see.

Liverpool waterfront is a world heritage site .. there's a Tate gallery .. titanic museum and lots of bars/restaurants

Liverpool one across the road is great for shopping and has a big John Lewis

The bars and restaurants round Matthew st are pretty good too

There are some nice places to stay in the centre .. I'd actually recommend it

The centre is far removed from the badlands,which you'd go no where near !

And .. there really are some lovely parts of Merseyside..

It's well worth a visit ... an no I'm not a scouser !

Do go fairly often mind as it's great for a shopping trip

The wife booked us a romantic weekend away in Liverpool a couple of years ago, I wasn't impressed when she told me. You Know what? We had a great weekend, I absolutely loved it. I had a bit of everything, food, music, culture and I returned with my hubcaps still in place (Skoda not Z4)
I need to plan a return visit, only this time might get a few extra jobs sorted.....like roof motor moved and vanos seals replaced.

Very similar list to myself when I picked one up. Did the Vanos seals myself mind, if you're half competent with tools, have a decent selection and can follow instructions its reasonably easy in a day first time. The car still runs with the seals gone, it just runs better when they're repaired!

I personally did the entire control arms rather than just the lollipops, but that was preventative more than needed, also did track rods and rear trailing arm bushes as they're the fastest parts to wear typically.

Shocks are easy enough. I changed my front springs at the same time as you have to take it all apart anyway. Get a set of spring compressors that can close tight as mine were barely able to get the new springs back on. Also do the usual top mounts/bump stops/dust boots while you're at it, as they're reasonably cheap and take no more time as you're pulling the old ones out anyway.
