Mitsubishi Lancer

My girlfriend was thinking about trading her car in sometime in the next few months and because we both drive 2 seaters at the moment we decided that her next car should be a bit more family orientated (gulp).

Don’t get me wrong this isn’t going to be a people carrier by any stretch of imagination but when I was looking around at 5 door hatch type cars I noticed that Mitsubishi have sneaked a bit of a halfway house into their range.

Has anyone got any ideas or views on the Lancer ralliart sport back, looks like it could be a decent motor with 240bhp and a big boot it ticks most of our boxes, it sits in the range above the standard cars yet below the expensive to run Evo’s, I know they are fairly new out so the majority of people wont of had a go yet but what do you all think? Am I barking up the wrong tree or should we just anoter ST but with 5 doors?

Iv read a few reviews and agree they aren’t great, but tbh I never really trust motor journalism as you just don’t know why they are trying to impress/ upset the frequent back hand payers etc.
I think all reviews like that can be taken with an (un)healthy dose of salt and I would much rather take account of the opinions of the people of forums such as this for a more honest and impartial point of view.
I know I will know a lot more when I go for a drive in one but I was hoping for the input of others based on what they think about it as a car, i.e. is it trying to hard to look like a pretend evo, or do you think it sits happily in its own middle ground as the evo is actually a different body shape. Not sure on the paddle s**t only option but am willing to give it a chance and drive it with an open mind, seems well kitted out too compared to a lot of the sporty hatchbacks.

Do you need a new car, and does it really need to be really fast or prestige etc. If you are planning on putting kids in it, it'll get the back seats and seat backs covered in all sorts of crap and junk... so having something really nice isn't really ideal unless you like to clean up all the associate mess :)

Why not just get a year or so old Evo X?

Dave

Fair comment - it also depends what the magazine doing the review is looking for in a car. I find WhatCar to be awful for my needs, but evo seem about right. Beauty of personal choice

A drive with some others will sort it for you :D

What else are you considering?

We could really do with owning a more practical car, I know my coupe is fairly practical and it been worth its weight in gold this week as iv been block paving my drive and it handled everything thrown at it from bricks to sand to whacker plates but really its not ideal, my girlfriend has always been a bit of a girl racer and likes performance cars, this is going to be her car and she understands what its going to be used for but why should she have to buy something middle of the road just because in the future we intend to put kids/dogs/bulky things/friends into it?
I had an ST before the Z4 and she absolutely loved it so I think another one of them is high on the shopping list I was merely searching around for other possible contenders.
The evo would be nice but it’s a bit too extreme, group 20 insurance, rubbish fuel, rubbish Tax and the fact its not a hatchback rules it out.
Forgot to mention she currently owns a Tigra thing which she never really got on with, before that she had the 2.2 Astra coupe bertone which was actually quite a nice car in its day.

CIVIC type R might be an option. My wifw owns a CIVIC and its great car. loads of space to put what u want to. Very practical. easy and fun to drive. easy to live with.

Don't think you will go wrong with that Lancer. Looks good and won't go wrong. Go on, go for something different!

My Girlfriend is also into her cars and she had a Tigra with the folding roof. She sold that and bought a Fiesta ST. Now that is a great car to drive.

She is looking to change at the moment and quite fancies the new VW Scirocco in white!

Thats half the appeal of it, i bet there will never be very many on the road and therefore it will always have the element of exclusivity even if its not considered the best in group by the media.

Although she has started making noises towards the Astra VXR and being a vauxhall girl at heart i dont know which way it will go...

Right that lancer didn’t cut the mustard due to it only being available with paddle shift and the fact my girlfriend doesn’t like using them.
Given the fact that her car is back in the garage with yet more electrical faults I think she is thinking about getting rid of it sooner rather than later.
Criteria still stands as a small hatchback with sporty credentials so the shortlist is something like this atm in no particular order..
1) Focus ST – I know she really likes these but the terrible fuel economy is putting her off.
2) Astra VXR – similar story to the focus really but I think the focus is a nice drive
3) Corsa VXR – seems much bigger tan you expect it to be and on paper seems plenty fast.
3) Fiesta ST 500 – she really likes these too and there is a minter in a dealership round the corner, only thing worrying me slightly is that its based on the older shape fiesta.
4) C30 T5 – lovely interior and engine but looks a bit crap from the back and not sure the boot is a useful shape.
Anyone got any ownership or other opinions on the above selection?

Lancer's are definitely a nice ride, but when it comes down to the hatches, I'd opt for a Subaru WRX/STi instead. Those look better IMHO, and can still satisfy the "girl racer" that is your girlfriend.
