Misfire, mostly low revs?

So have I .............but E46 fanatics haven't
See the link to the thread below There is a massive amount of data and there may be some 'golden threads' that may help. Keep us posted.
Have you tried a local independent BM specialist yet?

I was coming in here to say plugs... weird that it's made no odds given the symptoms. You 100% you changed the right one? Always check the obvious first!

No damage to the wiring where lead 2 plugs in?

Lol, yes I changed the right one Rob. I've checked the leads aren't arcing out in the dark and had a good play with them but they look ok, I guess I could always check the resistance continuity.

I think it could be an injector, half guessing tbh but I've done all the basics. I don't fancy taking that fuel line off though looks a bitch?

Took the car to a garage yesterday, supposedly bmw specialist, he's called me today to say he thinks its the coilpacks and plugs @ £350... I do wonder if they listened to me originally..
I've said not to do the work, as IMO that's not the fault.

Not sure what to do next lol. I hate it when cars go wrong!

Just remembered I'm with the AA!
It's the policy where if you're broken down on a journey they will take you to a garage and pay for any repairs upto £500.
Surely this should be covered? The car is running like a bag of spanners and tbh I don't really even like the thought of driving back home from the 'bmw specialist', running a misfire could damage the cat/pistons etc right?

Hi chris,
To rule out all other possibilities I would do a quick compression test on cylinder 2, then plug a noid light into the injector connector (LED with a suitable resistor will do just as well), crank it over and make sure the LED flashes, at the same time you can force fire the injector with a 12V feed direct from the battery, you should hear a definite click - there's no need to dis assemble the fuel rail to do this. Hopefully it will be a simple wiring issue or at the worst a sh***d injector.

^thanks Stu, the bmw specialist did actually do a fair job which was nice to see, I felt a bit fobbed off when they first called but once I'd been in and talked to the mechanic he explained more.
He checked the fault codes where I had codes for all 6 cylinders, maf etc (obviously these were still stored from when I was diagnosing myself), wiped the codes, took it for a drive and looked again, apparently cylinder 5 misfire, the car was give a full compression test (which was spot on), all plugs checked&cleaned and as said earlier, they advised all 6 to be changed at £350!

I didn't want to spend that much obviously when it's unnecessary work. Called the aa enroute to home and they came out within 15mins, changed coil pack 3, and its running sweet as a nut!
Obviously I didn't tell the aa guy I'd been playing lol, buts its weird all the coilpacks changed the engine note when I originally unplugged them, and that the diagnostic code reader I used the first time apparently said cylinder 2 :| I think this must have been misread and it threw me out.

Anyway, easy fix in the end. Annoying I had to fork out £90 for the diagnostic, wish I'd called the aa earlier, but at least I've got the compression test results so I can show the buyer when selling the car (in the next few months) and I can now have my bloody mot

Thank you so much for all your help, there's some very helpful people on here. It's so annoying when cars go wrong as you don't know who to trust but rest assured you guys are sound. Thankyou.

I just posted a thread on the exact same issue!

Thankfully it hopefully isn't going to be a massive problem. I've got it booked in for a service on saturday anyway :)

Hi Chris,

That's a result! , Strange how it threw up codes for nearly everything else except cylinder 3, If you had taken it to a BMW garage you would probably have been seriously out of pocket by now and probably still running on 5.

Stu.

Yeah thanks again guys.

No idea why it threw up incorrect fault codes, I suspect my original reader was a basic cheap bit of kit but why the specialists got it wrong I don't know. The AA guy was brilliant, nothing but praise there tbh which is nice to say, I've had bad experiences with the company in the past so this was refreshing.

To anyone else having the same problems, just buy a coil pack! It could save you some serious problems and prevent getting bent over at a garage as let's be honest, your balls are in their grubby mitts by that point. It's the only sure way of eliminating it, and its handy to have a spare for the future even if its something's else.
