Minging Steering Wheel

Afternoon All

I’ve owned my coupe for about 7 months now and during that time I’ve given the interior a clean and vacuum regularly. However this weekend I decided to give it a more thorough clean. Well I stared with the steering wheel, gave a wipe down then suddenly realised that the Matt finish on the plastic switch area and lower area with the M badge were actually covered in a layer of dirt. It took me about an hour to remove years of grime from all the plastic that I hadn’t even noticed. Maybe I need better glassesF14D4502-AB47-4158-A51D-5DC566BF40E3.jpeg


Clean finally.
 
thats not muck :) They all had some kind of vulcanised rubber coating on the switches, mine (and everyone else's) had it on.. obviously it doesn't age well. I did exactly the same thing on my e85 wheel and it does look alot better for it

So what happens you just remove the rubber coating and it reveals the black colour plastic underneath as per the OPs post? I can see some of the rubberised material on my drivers door handle and window switches either scratched or starting to peel off in places. There is a breaker on eBay with a used window switch panel in perfect condition but he wants almost what you can get one for brand new. I really don't get the greed of these breakers, some of their prices are ridiculous.

Nothing happens, you're just left with shiny black plastic rather than a matt effect, cant speak for the e89 switches whether thay have a similar coating I haven't really noticed.. Ill have a nosey after the motogp finishes
 
If you want to go the extra mile, get yourself some magic eraser dipped in warm water and gently wipe the wheel leather. Then marvel at the crap it removes and your new, back-to-matte finish steering wheel.
 
I gave the leather a going over with Auto Glym leather cleaner which did remove a fair bit. Will have a look at magic eraser, thanks.
I’m glad to learn it was a coating I was removing. It certainly turns sticky and soft over time. I can see that the coating on the door switches is still in place and in good condition.

Honestly its incredible what a magic eraser can do (magical you might say). Just take it gently and use plenty of warm soapy water :thumbsup:

Yep it is quite a powerful tool but some say to use it with care on leather since it is quite aggressive. I did use it on my steering wheel carefully and it came back up to the original matt finish but doesn't seem to have lasted that long.

Regarding removal of the rubberised coating on the steering wheel I use Auto Glym interior cleaner and it came of quite easy leaving a good finish to the underlying black plastic .

I would recommend supagard executive leather care, I felt quite important carrying it back to the car from a charity shop being executive
Its never been used until I did my steering wheel and seats ,amazing the grime/DNA on the steering wheel
I paid £3.00 for it RRP is around £30
Really cleans then nice lotion to apply to the leather , looks like new again
