And certainly, if he had been posthumously awarded them, and his son and other close blood relatives deceased, she would have been sent them by the medal office..

They are her father in laws award and her husband (the son) is also going to the service wearing a medal from a disciplined civilian service. He could do as you do and wear them inside if he feels that his father should "be there".
