Ah I was on red flag in 2009 while on 1 f squadron

And yes getting 500 dollars a week cash in hand and a wooly claim back form was amazing!!!

I was there in 92 so its probably changed a lot since. Great place but tbh I was glad to get outa there by the end.
 
Congratulations on 30yrs!

My younger son is currently going through recruitment as a POC for the Marines. Very mixed feelings :?

I understand your concerns for your son, we live in dangerous times, but for what its worth imo the Royal Marines are our finest fighting force (SF not included) and I haved worked with all of them. I wouldn't recommend it as a long term career tho, 6 yrs max and then move on :)
 
He wants SF and sees this as the most likely route in. Gym twice a day, swimming several times a week, running several times a week. He's turned into a regular racing snake. The Paras would take him now, the Marines wanted better UCAS points so he's going back to college to redo an A level to get the points. That is enough of a commitment I'm convinced he's thought it through. Still scared shitless though. :|
 
SF is whole new ball game, I can see why yr worried. He sounds like a very determined young man I wish him the best of luck. With the Marines there are more options open to him, he can go 2 ways SAS or SBS.
 
I'm not sure how old he is stu but I would tell him not to rush into sf until he's done a few years as a regular bootneck...possibly a few tours if afghan too, although his co wouldn't recommend him for selection until he's experienced anyway. But if he thrives on the training he gets at lympstone then brilliant stuff! I've got a friend in sf reserves if he wants to ask questions through me I can ask. Cos I know there isn't much info out there and I work on a base full of thrusting marines :?
One very scary looking sgt told me that he went for selection, and part of it was nine days in a jungle, he has done many trips there as a regular bootneck but said it was so unbearable being there for sf selection that he gave up after two days, and I would not f**k around with this guy :|

But so long as he has absolutely no history of injuries he stands a chance, oh and Is hard as very hard nails :lol:

He's 21. He seems realistic about SF and when it would be possible although I suspect Lympstone will "reset" his thinking as to when. The recruitment office has been excellent. As to SF, a friend got through basic selection and then was casevac out of Belize after being bitten by some unknown insect. Had to do it all again!
 
Apparently its not unusual for people to get thro on their 2nd 3rd attempt due to injuries. Once you get into that world yor time is not your own, your forever on call :(
