......but are there any possible problems of leaving a usb charger plugged in permanently? I have just bought a 'stubby' dual usb charger and it is small enough that I can keep it plugged in and still close the lid on it. It appears that the 12v outlet is live even without ignition on. Basically will this somehow cause battery problems (i can't see how if not connected to a device) or might I come back one day to see the car burnt down - also guess this is highly unlikely! I do kinda feel daft asking this......

i had one of the Belkin ones plugged into my 1'er for about 12 months without issue.

I've got a bluetooth receiver/usb charger hard wired behind the dash, just to keep it out the way/free up cig lighter.

I've had no problems...

However, it comes on/off with the ignition - works nicely like that for me, as the phone then disconnects/pauses music, and the bt button is fed through and mounted by stereo - one push to reconnect/play. Anyway, i digress - I'm fairly sure I wired this in straight across the ciggy lighter... didn't have to prod around for a switched 12v as far as I remember!
