Might help if you say where you are

Also, what service history it has and if it’s HPI clear.

MOT history not encouraging, but it’s fairly cheap.

Sorry new to this

No HPI
Unsure of the service history as we got it without a book from my husbands friends so limited information.

Well I suppose it can be free of finance, but still a Cat D.

HPI means Hire Purchase and Insurance (databases), doesn't it?

Being on the Insurance database means it's been a total loss, no? :?

I would hope that a 21 year old, 150k mile, insurance write off E85 with no MOT and 'issues' would be free of finance TBH. Unless it was bought with a 'pay day' loan! :D

When I was handling Motor Claims in the 70s/80s HPI meant Hire Purchase Investigation, so in the event of a total loss we had to pay the finance provider before the "owner" who just got anything left over!

As years went by HPI checks expanded to include the Cat database.

But it doesn't take much damage to make a 20 year old Z4 uneconomical to repair!

Seriously, if it had an MOT and any issues fixed it might be worth £2k but at 150k it’s close to end of life, as it is someone will take a chance, either fix the issues or keep reducing the price until it sells.

Can you provide that information please? No cat D has been mentioned by anybody the whole 2 years I have had it

No-one’s going to mention it to you unless you check. You should check when you buy. It’s something you should declare to your insurer. Because of this, and knowing the vehicle has been in a crash, values are typically 25-50% lower. You can find out yourself for free by creating a dummy Autotrader ad, which will run a basic HPI check, or by paying for a full HPI check.

If you pay for a vcheck online (about a tenner) you will get a good history check and HPI check.
If its been damaged and declared category write off it may even have salvage pics on it too.

Its a risky purchase for sure, so I would definitely get the detail down to help any prospective buyers, especially if it is a write off and you didnt know about it!
