Metallic rattle clattering from rear when going over bumps

Hi All,

I've got the car out this morning and the first small bump that I've gone over i've heard a horrible metallic sounding rattle/clanging from the rear. Any ideas what this could be? The car hanndles fine, just sounds like metal hitting metal when going over bumps.

Indeed - most likely a broken spring.

Damn - just managed to search a bit more and it seems like a common problem - would people recommend getting all the springs replaced with aftermarket ones all in one go to save time/money/annoyance of the other going - if so which ones would you recommend (links would be great )

Result! Just took the car into the local stealer and they've confirmed that it is a broken rear drivers side spring and even though the car is out of warranty, cos the car's only done 26k miles, BMW will pay for it to be fixed tomorrow as a goodwill gesture!
