Meguiars 3 step process and a DAS-6 DA polisher? yay or nay?

Hi Guys,

Just bought all of the above. I was thinking that the first two steps of the meguairs process may be better applied by hand as they are quite harsh to the paint?

Am i correct in a assuming that a DAS6 is only really good for polishing/waxing? i.e - the later stages of a detailing?

I plan to detail the car as follows.

- Wash car
- Clay with Meguiars bar
- Wash car again
- Apply the three stages of Meguiars
- Probably another coat of wax to finish off

I am a complete newbie at this!!!

You will get good results from washing and claying then applying a good wax/sealant. Using a polisher will help get a good result and take some of the ache out of the job. BMW paint is hard and getting swirls and light scratches out isn't easy. I have a DA polisher myself and having had a go at swirl removal with little success have decided to leave it to a professional to get the job done properly :)

I use Meguiars stage 1 and 2 then Raceglaze 55 for the final polish. I have never found Meguiars 'harsh' to the paintwork of any of my cars. Clay about once a year normally in the spring. I always use filtered water to for the final wash before drying and polishing - I find this really does make a difference to the final finish. I have never used a mechanical/rotary polisher - I am afraid that by just picking up a small speck of dirt this will quickly transfer and damage the paintwork. Good old elbow grease works best!

You might find this useful just on the claying part...

Few extra pointers from a couple of the more experienced chaps. I think GAZA62 posted a very good step by step photo "story" of one of his cleans... excellent job too!

Have to say I didn't wash mine again after claying... could be wrong.

Also, as it was my first time I washed, clayed, polished and waxed once each as I took my time. Also, claying took forever as I kept stopping to stroke the car in amazement!

I was recommended a Megs product called Scratch-X, or something like that, apparently great at getting rid of swirls. May add that into the mix in future.

Can't help with the polisher though mate.

at the end of summer i done mine....wash, megs clay then done the megs three step with an electric buffer and seperate polishing cloths for each phase and i was really impressed.

heres a couple of pics.

you will find that all of the steps doesnt get rid of all polishing swirls but your car will look mega shiney, will turn heads (even more) and hey.....if you r ever under a halogen light just dont look at the car :P

BOLLOCKS!!!!

Someone has keyed the passanger side of the car, i noticed at lunch today.

How can i go about removing it? All i have is the three step meguiars and the scratch x.

Will a compounding pad sort it?

depends how deep it is
why do people do these things :headbang:

Not too deep. Its not really visible from 10 feet away. But its defintley there, cant feel it with my finger nail so i presume its not too deep.

When i bought my Audi A4, i parked it outside my grandmothers godforsaken street. Some git had scratched the whole drivers side from bonnet to front wing.

I honestly dont know what goes on in a persons though process when it somes to vandalising someone elses property

Great work rudd!

I remember seeing your thread about this detail somewhere. I cant remember if it was on detailingworld or this site.

Could you possibly point me in the direction of where it is?
Cheers

Bad times :( Scratch X is OK but be careful as its and abrasive compound and will utimately reduce paint thickness as you use it. Do this slowly and carefully. If the score is not too bad this will certainly help reduce the effect but as has already been said it depends on the depth of the scratch. If you can reduce the visible impact of the score then reapply the Meguiars to protect the surface. The link below may be of use. Good luck.

I think i just dropped them in another thread.........this is what i did though

i usually wash the car with a jet hose, then go over it with a mitt in a bucket of warm water with shampoo in and one clean water for rinse. then use quick detailer if im feeling lazy.

1. wash car as above (2 bucket method).
2. clay the car - use maguires clay kit.
3. use maguires paint cleaner. (for step 3 and on i use a machine polisher with differen on/off bonnets for each treatment i.e. on with one rag of with a clean one - for polishing rags i use 100% cotton stuff from halfords)
4. use stage 2 maguires polish
5. use maguires stage 3 carnuba wax (mmmmm banana)

takes a good day and a half- maybe 2 but its worth it for the first major clean. then just keep your wax and polish in good condition and revert to being lazy.

i removed all of the indicator bits and rear lights just for that bit of extra detail when i did it but i guess its not essential. i hope this helps.

sorry to hear about some 4rse keying your car  if its not too deep it might polish out with the scratch x and then the three step.
