Mattress Recommendation

Hi all,

I'm looking to replace our main mattress, to be honest haven't bought one in years although you're supposed to replace every 8  probably why I'm starting to get an achey back in the mornings

I've ruled out a memory foam type as have a memory foam topper on our existing matress and never been keen. I've narrowed it down to either a Vispring or Tempur. Nice thing with the Vispring is you can get two singles of different softness and zip them together. Unsure how successfull this is. The Vispring are quite expensive but see it as an investment to be honest if well made.

Any recommendations on the Vispring? They do exchange the matress if your not happy with it which might be handy as no local stockists.

Cheers,

Tim.

I always thought Tempur was memory foam, purely based on my pillows. Agree on non memory foam, tried one before & found them far too hot during the night.

Ours is due for replacement soon, allegedly due to the what seems to be newly marketed 8yr swap - guess they want to drive frequency of purchase somehow. If I work on 3 nights a month away, and then 4 weeks holiday away, then their 'slept in' vs owned for 8 years gives me another 1.5 years left....I'm such a geek!

Interested as to what you end up buying & your thoughts

We bought a John Lewis Naturals collection mattress and are very pleased with it have you looked at them?

Another company I looked and and considered was John Ryan they have an excellent reputation and seem to get excellent reviews

Go and try some is what I would suggest

Thanks Matt, I think you are correct on the Tempur looking by their website, I didn't realise this, good job I checked now. I think the Vispring are supposed to last upto 25 years and are handmade to a large extent. I just wandered anyone who has one can recommend them.

Thanks Ash will have a look at the John Lewis collection. Ideally its best to try but will have arrange a special trip out of town to perhaps John Lewis in Brum and have a proper look as they stock Vispring as well. Local bed stockists to us are your general hum drum cheaper end of the market beds etc. Not saying thats bad, I could be wrong in thinking more expense is better? but we don't mind paying to get a decent matress.

Just changed from a memory foam to a pocket sprung. Much firmer and allows heat to disperse compared to memory foam

We bought this in s kingsize

I looked all over and found you pay for what you get :)

We went for a Medium Naturals Collection 7000 series from memory (think the 8000 has replaced it now) and its excellent and JL were mega helpful as always.

Let us know how you get on

Ash

Google Eve Mattresses .........

Herself bought one ........ I wasn't impressed when she did it, but to be honest it is the best mattress we have ever had

We replaced ours a couple of years ago - after trying loads we shortlisted Hypnos and Somnus and ended up getting one custom made by Somnus

Should say that neither of us can stand memory foam mattresses - they make us overheat

My wife has just said to me "you are not on those car forums again are you?"

I replied yes. When I told her that the Zed boys are talking about which is the best mattress to have she thought I was joking.

With all the garage queens on here, it's the only place they have a chance of a ride

I spents months, days and afew hours looking for a mattress and was still none the wiser. Other than my assumption that price = comfort
I spent a night in Hendon On Thames Weatherspoons (very posh compared to the ones up north....)
The mattress was a Sealey. I admit, I didn't give it a 'proper' test but just a standard 8 hour sleep - damn was it comfortable (mind you, I had supped a fair amount of ale the night before)
So I bought a Sealey with a stiched on topper
It cost me 800quid which to be honest might not sound like a lot but to me It was as if the Dreams salesman had seriously ******** me. First night, I wasn't impressed. Nothings changed either. It'll do I suppose, it'll have to. At least I haven't got a gorgeous blonde laid in the bed with me every night, winging that its uncomfortable and that I should have spent more.
So yeah.... Im also on the look out for a new mattress

Oh ffs Tim!

Strange the whole 8 year replacement on a mattress when IKEA sell their mattresses with a 25 year guarantee. Not sure I'll have kept mines that long to find out.

I get what people say re the memory foam stuff but I find after a couple of weeks the initial 'too hot' sensation is gone and it's a great nights sleep thereafter

Off the wall question here, but have you ever tried a waterbed?, we've had one for the last 18 years, replaced the water mattress once as the vinyl had brittled, very comfy & heated to an even temperature all year round, a waterbed is not everyone's cup of tea granted.

Thanks for the replies all :D I guess the problem with asking is everyone has a different view as to what is comfortable and I know I will feel a complete twot laying on beds in John Lewis  depending who the salesperson is :? I can never see how you can decide if something is going to be comfortable unless I sleep over in the store :D

From what peeps have said its given me some more makes to look into so thanks for that. Looks like the Vispring matresses are on a 6 week lead time from John Lewis which is no big deal but I definitely know I don't want a memory foam type as things can get a tad hot in the night.

Thanks Tony, I hadn't even thought of one to be honest, are they expensive? only problem is I'm a non swimmer  I'm quite intrigued to try one though.

The Ex-wife and I had a Water-bed, but to be honest it ruined our sex-life and we just drifted apart

When the new Mrs 5 and I went to buy our current bed, we had a pushy salesmen. The Wife was happy to do the deal, but I said I needed to sleep on it... :D

I'm just unsure if I would feel sea sick on a water bed, not very romantic throwing up over SWMBO

I went for a pocket sprung with memory foam many yrs ago. The pockets are individual and in theory means a person on one side of the bed can move without affecting the other. Helpful if like you move about a lot and your other half is a light sleeper.

In practice it worked quote well unless I do something really daft

Still is the most comfy bed I've slept in

We spent ages looking for one - but a Harrison Matress won hands down. Fully hand made to your requirements, in the UK and not at break the bank prices. Only thing is, is you won't find many prices online - you have to go in store and try them st various stockists. If you go with a standard one then you will also find the prices don't change much between stockists.
