The successor to the 4200.

Just wondering if anyone's had any seat time in one? The Cambiocorsa circa 04-07.

Off to drive one for the second time tomorrow and after looking at everything from porsches to aston's, I think I've found the replacement to the Z if I can bare to let go! The prices of an aston, 360, 996 turbo etc sit around $35k+ over what I can sell the Z for whereas the Cambiocorsa is actually $10k less, or close to a straight trade if I P/X. Being I'm trying to buy a house and start a business at the moment, that is huge brownie points.

Pros:

price
essentially a ferrari 430 engine and ferrari cog box
Suspension is awesome, firm but communicative
interior is plush
That engine when you open the taps? GOOD god! Sounds sublime
400bhp out of the box, 0-100kph in around 4.6, and what a thumping mid range
it's italian
not too common - but more common than the Z

cons:
less toys. No parking, no sat nav, computer etc
running costs?
flappy paddles - but it won't be used around town really
Not a convertible (not sure how much of a down this is, in the summer believe it or not it's actually too damn hot for a convertible.)
4 seats - not sure why it's a con, I just like two..
the mirrors are silly. but I"m sure I could change them.
Not sure on the look of the front headlights either - look a little dated

I had all but committed to a 911 997.2 about two weeks ago, which was more than the z, felt a bit soul less though - but very accomplished, precise and well built - But I felt I was more tempted just because it was a porsche tbh and at the end of the day it didn't really offer anything more than that above the Z. Whereas I drove the rati and it had that same special feel that made me choose the Z.

Just wondering if anyone has had experiences/comparasions to the Z? or any good memories or horror stories?

the one I'm after is:

My only real gripe is that the interior is the blue and not the white, but a minor qualm I guess.

Other cars I'd been looking at have included the M6, Corvette C5 and 911 of various flavours as well as a circa 2006 jag XKR. None of which have wowed me enough to take my money - the closest has been the Corvette, but it'd need to be a c6 for the very dated interior which pushes it into the price bracket of 360's 996 GT3's etc.

I found the gearbox MUCH more responsive than earlier 4200's I had driven.

It's a lovely looking car....haven't driven one myself, but as with all Italian cars never under estimate the real world running costs. I'd say the 997.2 would be a better car in every conceivable benchmark, but you'd never get the admiring looks the you would have in that!

A chap on my street has a 430 convertible, his last service bill was £3600 for a 'couple of bits'.

what a problem to have....

Too hot for roof off

insane!

 never thought I'd say it! I love it when the weather drops below 30, but during the summer you have it down out of principle but really want to have it up with the air con blaring! mostly due to the seats, pulling up then getting out with a mahoosive sweat patch is NOT a good look!

I did give that a think but tbh here the running costs will be just about as much on the Z or a 997, $400 for an oil change, $1500 for an inspection and god forbid you need parts!

She won't be a daily driver, I've done about 15k kms in the beem over 3 years (don't get me wrong, I've loved every one of them!!) but I have a daily driver and bikes that get used for the mundane stuff, so hopefully the running costs won't be too much an issue.

1) Check the percentage of clutch life remaining.

2) Check the cost of replacing the clutch.

A friend of mine sold his 4200 rather than replace the clutch, someone else I know got a great deal on a quattroporte (until he realised it needed a new clutch)

Clutch replacement runs at around £5k!

ouch! good info cheers. I've always thought there's going to be an absolute flood of cheap dsg equipped golfs, golf R's, and the like on the market at some point because of the price.

How can you tell on the auto-manuals how much clutch is remaining?

It's not so much of a consideration here, the cambiocorsa's are still going for $45-65k like the Z4Ms, so it's not like the uk where 5k is a third of the price of car. Not sure if that's a good thing or not

I do love the look and sound of these. I've often considered the same swap. It'll be interesting to see how you get on.

Good luck.

Yeah the looks are the things I can't decide on. From certain angles it looks absolutely stunning. From others? not to sure. But the ferrari 430 v8 is a biig draw, what a sound. Drove another a few days ago and I'm still not sure how I feel!

i've narrowed the search down to:

1) this cambiocorsa, 2004
2) waiting a few months and going for a Vantage v8 but am going off that idea. V12s are much too expensive as are db9's and vanquishes here
3) 360 circa 2001 convertible
4) 911 turbo (996)
5) Wild card is the alfa 4c which I'm viewing a demo of on the weekend, but I can't shake the feeling that going to a light 4 pot after the Z4M will leave me very bored very quick, regardless of how quick it sprints to 60 or goes round corners...

The gearbox on the cambio is actually quite good, not sure if I'd miss a traditional manual though. (360 will likely be an f1 due to rarity of the manuals too)

Price is a big plus to the cambio and db7 but when neither will probably add more over the Z4 other than a bit of noise and a badge, it's a tough sell when I Try and make a 'smart' choice.

I like the look of that but echo what's been said above and do your checks. These links may help.

They look and sound great but they aren't actually that quick are they? Certainly no quicker than the M would be and with a whole world of hurt on the maintenance side to get your head around - a bit like an Aston Martin V8 Vantage in that respect.

it's a hard one, from a standstill? hmm it didn't really feel like it. On Paper it should be, but then RaceChrono reckons that my Z4 will do the 0-60 in 4.69 so short answer is no they're not any quicker I guess. Although I wasn't exactly flogging the test drive.

But higher up the rev range they have this tireless pull that was addictive. Whereas I find the the Z starts to trail off as you head towards the redline, I found the V8 had oodles of punch all the way. I think a lot of it was placebo from that addictive growl though, I reckon I'd notice it less and less with time.

I don't think it would be as quick as the Z on a nice twisty course; or at least, the Z suits my driving style more.. Interesting point though. Whereas the M6 (another two have just come up for sale now I mention it) felt properly quick compared to the Z, the Cambio just felt different in terms of delivery.. The only thing that stopped me going home in the M6 despite it absolutely propelling you along, is that the Z4M felt like a go-kart in comparison. Very aware that you're in a big car in the M6, the Cambiocorsa did a good job of still feeling extremely nimble and felt like a good mid point between the Z and the 6. Which, I suppose in almost every measurable stat it is. Performance, power, torque, weight, size. But perhaps a fair bit closer to the Z than the M6
