Manual roof opening

When I picked up my car, the dealer showed me what looked like an Allen Key in the boot, and said that I would need it in case the roof ever failed, and I had to wind it shut manually. I've looked for instructions on how to do this in the manual, but can't find any mention of it. Is anyone aware how this operation is carried out please, or if there are any instructions hidden somewhere?

Page 23/24 of the handbook (or thereabouts depending on country of origin). The 'allen' key is for locking the roof when closed into the two front screen frame mounted 'clips'. If it's not in your handbook open up the link and go to the 'brochure section and you can download the respective handbook in pdf format.

Lets hope you never need to do it manually.... :P

The manual for the E89 makes no reference to allen keys for using with the roof. Couldn't see what happens if it fails, but due to complex nature I think you will get wet until BMW fix it.

I also cannot find instruction of manual operation of the roof from the manual. I really don't think you can do that on E89.

Yes, the manual winder for the electric sunroof on my Mazda is the size of a starting handle, so it seemed a bit unrealistic trying to close a 350lb roof with a small allen key. AlanJ - wouldn't mind getting caught in the rain with a young Debbie Reynolds lookalike, but knowing my luck, she's probably going to be more like Burt Reynolds!!

Not sure if you can manually move (ease) the two panels into place, but as others have said there's no way to lock them down. I suspect it would need to be a phone call to BMW emergency services. :(

I'm not so sure BMW emergency services would help unless the roof is stuck half way, as it is my understanding they will only attend if the car is not driveable. Also not sure what they could actually do at the road side.

Think they'd come as long as it was stuck down as well. The roof on the Slk can't get stuck in between, only shut or open. The z4 one works a bit differently though.

I remember seeing on another forum an E93 roof getting stuck half way - it's even more complex with 3 moving panels, but it was a job for BMW Emergency Services. Think they had to tow it to the dealers.

It would be a bit of a nightmare if the boot lid was left in the open position (folded back). This would surely make the car undriveable - it would act as a massive airbrake! :?

When my car was - ahem - recovered on it's first day the recovery truck driver told me a tale about a Bentley he had to recover with it's fabric hood stuck half open - vertically - he said it had to be loaded onto the flatbed backwards so it didn't act as a big air scoop!

Guess warranty would have to cover any damage to interior etc.

Outside warranty - who knows.
