Manual gear box

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question on the manual transmission on a coupe N52k. Is it true you will feel a slightly stiffer gear change when cold than to when it's warmed up after a few minutes? Cheers.

As has already been said its due to the oil being thicker when cold. It happens in all gearboxes but in some its much more noticeable than others. If you think yours is particularly bad for this it could be due to the oil being past its best, a change of the gear oil can work wonders to the all round gear change, both when hot and cold.

No noticeable difference on mine between cold and warm in terms of gear change. Have you ever changed the gearbox oil?

Thanks!
This was the kind of answer I was hoping to hear. I know it can feel different but on 3 of my last 4 cars there was no noticeable difference from cold to hot. Just wanted to check with people who know this particular car inside out.

I haven't bought one yet but I'm hoping to view one on Monday, so fingers crossed it's a good one as I'm getting one way (being optimistic) car hire and driving 4hrs to view it! I've missed out on a couple recently (one 5 minutes away!!) so hoping it's 3rd time lucky. Thanks again for your responses

In that case OP, I hope your trip has a successful outcome.

I found fresh transmission fluid and a ZHP gear-knob improved mine no end, but it's still a bit stiffer from cold than when it has warmed up. But thankfully it's much better than the gearbox in my 3 Series with the same N52 engine - BMW manual boxes seem to vary in quality! :?

So do I!

I'm sure changing the gearbox oil won't do it any harm so I might do it anyway if I decide to pull the trigger. It Hasn't had the water pump changed though so I'm hoping it'll behave itself.

I'll post some pics on Monday if all goes well.

What kind of oil do you need to use for the gearbox?

My Indy invoiced me for 2 litres of LTF MT2 when he did mine, but I think I remember reading somewhere that it doesn't need a full 2 litres.

Same stuff as on the E46 then?

Looks like it, I got invoiced for 2 litres of the same stuff for my E46.

Not exactly cheap!

(I think for my E36 I just used Dexron II ATF (as per the manual) from ECP. Much cheaper!)
