Manifold to downpipe fixings.

Ok, so need to move my exhaust from the downpipe to the backbox joint, as I've tack welded my secondary cats back in place after removing their internals. Now need to get them tig'd up, so want to do that off the car.

What's the score with these weird fixings holding the clamps together? They look like they are missing their nuts, so to speak. Have ground flat one of the fixings at the manifold side, and it looks like it's a splined fit into the clamp, just can't work out how they have tightened them without a visible mut on the other end.

My plan tomorrow is to use the plasma cutter to "release" the manifold side by gouging into the centre of the fixing, and replace with M8 nuts and bolts, but before I tackle it, is there something simple I'm missing to release them?

Hi, I think they're supposed to have nuts but they corrode away to nothingness over time!
I've read the splined portion is pressed into the clamp, with massive corrosion it may prove impossible to tap them out

If there "should" be nuts, I'm surprised my joint hasn't fallen apart, as there no signs of any of them!

Cut them off and drill out the remnants (Have use a really slow speed, plenty of pressure and cutting lube or it will work harden), Or If you've got the gear, burn them out. Replace with M10x40 bolts (And plenty of ceramic anti seize grease)

By the way it's a bloody horrible job.......I'm sure others will tell you the same

Seems to be a common fault, mine had rotted away to the point there was nothing sticking through to hold a nut thus mine did part, along way from home, sounded like a tank.

I know Russ, Smartbear, Pastry and myself are off to foreign parts that weekend, be a shame to miss it though, always a good turnout for Duxford

I'm planning on making the watermill meet (Depending on Holidays) I'll see you there!
