MAF Grid Filter Broken

I changed the OEM DISA v/v for X8R replacement, much better quality and design. Simple change out but noticed something in the air box pipe downstream of the MAF. There is a plastic open grid that is an integral part of the air pipe fixed with 4 moulded tabs. On inspection 2 of these tabs were broken!! I have taken the whole thing out before it starts a journey into the engine!! There is a finer metal mesh upstream of the MAF and of course the standard air filter. I really don’t see the purpose of this plastic grid. Has anyone come across this problem before or have any idea why it is there? I have attached photos of the broken grid and the original part.MAF1152-INT.jpg20240529_151157.jpg20240529_150119.jpg

I’d guess it’s there for strength. The jubilee clips there. As the air is sucked in the pipe could be squashed allowing air to get it.

Just checked and the pipes and jubilee overlaps are quite rigid but what you say makes sense as there does not seem to be any other purpose for the grid. It also ties in with the fact that the downstream pipe goes over the MAF end. Being round and evenly tightened I would have thought that the jubilee clip would put a fairly even pressure around the joint. Ironically, I think that the jubilee clip may have been overtightened in the past and the grid tabs have broken due to the excess force. Still agree with you though that it is there to stiffen and stabilise the joint. Thanks and regards.
