Hi, started to get rid of the BMW orange peel today but only managed one side,
1st - 1200, 2000 then 3000 wet and dry
2nd - 4 stage 3M cutting and polishing system (electric mop)
3rd - Back is killing!

Here's a few pics of the result (was just starting to get dark)

Good job,always best to take your time,even half one day and the rest another just like your doing.That way the last panel is as good as the first. :thumbsup:

Agree :thumbsup: I've only managed the wing, door and rear quarter on one side, about 8 hours so far :headbang:

I've done a few over the years but don't think I could do it for a job :D
 
Looks fantastic. I know black cars are hard to keep looking fresh. Good job

The dimpled effect you can see on very clean paintwork. Much more noticeable on black & blue cars. BMW are famous for it :headbang:
 
Wow that looks great! Was the wet and dry done by hand or machine? Want to try it myself just when we have more then one day of nice weather

By hand matey, takes a lot longer but reduces the risk of breakthrough (going through the lacquer exposing the basecoat). In my opinion you need to be skilled to sand using a machine :)

Just take your time its definitely worth the effort :thumbsup:

Couple of tips. start with 1200 grit (I didn't use a sanding block on a Zed because of all the sexy curves) go over the panel lightly then let it dry. You will see the orange peel due to loads of glossy spots. Then use 2000 grit to remove the glossy spots bit by bit (be careful on the edges and panel creases). When the panel is totally matt go over it with 3000 grit which makes it far easier to restore the gloss with a mop. Hope that helps :thumbsup:
 
I know this is a genuine technique, but you must have massive kahoonas to do it.

oh wait, look at your last picture....your legs are definately wide enough to accomodate them!

20 years of football LOL

First couple of times I did it I must say I was very nervous although it's either give it a go, pay someone skilled a few hundred quid to do it or put up with orange peel. It really isn't massively difficult if you are good with your hands, I definitely wouldn't attempt it if you can't peel a spud :D
