m54 vanos delet talk to me

Anyone know much about it? What and where to buy kits?

I am aware it’s not something most people will want to do. But my car is fairly heavily breathed on. And it will make the car more tuneable with FI and it opens up more standalone ECU options for much less ££ and i suspect my car will be getting some cams soon anyway.

I have seen some kits. I am hoping for something that maybe i can make? If not i may be forced to put my short arm in my deep pocket.

Thanks in advance

I don’t know Mike?

A kit to delet is $139 just asking some questions to see if it will do what I want it to do. If so it’s not worth worrying about the cash. (Found it after posting hear) I could only find s54 stuff previous. And it will save me £500 on the ecu end if I can delet it!

Vanos delete kit is probably the cheapest but somehow I suspect not the best.
chance is that the m54 camshafts have a lot of overlap in intake/exhaust lift (NA engine with high power). Thats not ideal for FI.
I have a hunch that an m50 cam will drop right in.
The m50b25 turbo community is quite big so you could ask those guys if that really works (so e36 scene)

Yeah it’s not the best option. But it’s a now option!! Money is tighter than ever and having to spend £1k or more isn’t helping! I need to finish the car for now. Get it running at least.
And the ecu option to deal with vanos is an extra £700 witch is more towards cams. So delet then now as a bit of a bodge and fix later.
But I might know a friendly fella with a set of 328 cams. I will google and search and call him now.

Thanks so much as always my fountain of bmw knowledge

328 cams are still vanos I believe (at least single vanos for the m52; dual vanos for the m52tu)
The vanos was originally made for getting more torque in low revs, but with a turbo thats not really an issue anymore (at least when you can get it to spool low).
But for turbo a 328 (m52tu) inlet cam and the original m54 exhaust cam might work. That is also the famous FI camset, but then from schrick, so with different lift etc. Maybe the original timings (between m54 exhaust/m52tu inlet) also have that better adjusted FI timing overlap.

Maybe you can get a m50b25 really cheap from a wrecked car locally? M50 manifold is also interesting and maybe better for turbo (simpeler build with some sort of a plenum, no disa), and maybe there are other interesting parts. The m50 is simpeler (and for turbo simple is usually better)
Still more work though than a vanos delete (and probably still more expensive). But less adventurous :D

Yeah for now a delet is the option. I want to get it running and driving.

Plans are to either buy a second engine not sure witch one as 2.5 might be a better option or 2.2? Shorter stroke. But there is also the elephant in the room!! We have a 1.5jz and 2 1uz in the workshop!! And I may just ditch the BMW engine.

With a 1uz I can hit 500bhp all day long with a head gasket and stud change.

But I need to get this working before the next round of mods!!

There's a guy on zpost that did a 2jz swap in a coupe.
But if you read his thread you soon realize that he's quite the electronics wiz when he starts placing pics with multiple scopes in the background and breadboards with chips to make it all work (pedals, speedo, rev etc etc)
That's not a problem with an aftermarket ecu? (so canbus integration and electronic throttlebody)

Putting in a 1uz and making that all fit with steering, motormounts and gearbox is right up your ally of course. You can do that in a lunchbreak and an evening with your background.

The bmw engines will win in balance though. They're aluminium and they're mounted tilted for lower center of gravity (compared to the 1.5jz)

I would go for that v8 if you can think you can make it work (electronically). It'll be the most special combination.

As far as bmw engines (if you keep going that route) I would stick with the m54b30 (most displacement) and once you get that working, experiment with the m50 manifold (or weld your own), and maybe experiment with the alternate cam combination (ask your tuner)

All my plans start begin the last has finished. I like the V8 option!

Anyway after chatting to a mate that races a 328 e36 he is going to have a route around for me. He has a few dpsir sets of cams so we are looking into what’s what and what he has.
