I'm a long-time reader but first-time poster - this forum has been really helpful since I've had my Z4 (a year or so). It's an '03 2.5i (M54).
I think I have a DISA valve issue (you are probably sick of these threads now) - I've read a few threads but I'd just like thoughts on the specific issue as I'm not 100% sure.
I noticed a bit of a tapping/rattling sound and thought it was coming from the DISA valve box - on removing the electrical connector this sound goes away. However, I've just taken the DISA off and the solenoid seems to be working correctly - turning it 90 degrees and placing my finger over the hole, it moves slightly but does not return to centre, so the vacuum seems to work. This is based off the Pelican Parts test at the bottom of this page. It also doesn't seem like the pin is loose or anything, feels quite 'tight'. Some people have said the pin just fell out on theirs, certainly looked solid on mine.
Having thought it maybe wasn't the DISA, I've reconnected and using Torque Pro (+Bluetooth OBDII) found that I have a P1511 DISA fault code. Cleared the fault code, but it comes back. I have no engine management light.
The previous owner said 'I replaced the DISA valve' but I can only see an invoice for the DISA o-ring, so maybe I misunderstood. Otherwise it has a lot of receipts so I'm inclined to think he hasn't replaced the valve itself or rebuilt it (not accusing him of misleading me).
I've ordered an X8R rebuild kit for the 2.5 as that seems to be the go-to rebuild kit. Does this sound like what I need to do, given that it seems to operate OK - could it just be a little loose and hence rattling? From what I have read, if the 'vacuum test' works then the valve itself should be OK.
I also have a relatively long drive coming up next weekend, hopefully the kit will be here by then. If not, am I OK to run it with the electrical connector disconnected? I realise I will probably lose some power low-down and maybe MPG, but other than that should it be fine? I would guess this is preferable to running with a rattly valve.
